I remember when @Old Guy was appalled that I dared to say that I didn't know if it Melton would be WR5 or if it would be Dubose.

Sure looks like the Dubose stock is on the rise right now.  But, we are a long way from Week One that counts.

Either way....that WR room has come a long way in 3 years.  And that is without having to invest a first round pick.   And really, only two second round picks.  Kindda scary, but in a good way.

To be honest, I didn't get why DuBose was getting so much love in here as camp was opening. I had him pegged as the next Darius Sheppard type.  I get that it was "just a pre-season game" but his performance vs CLE was an eye-opener for me.

The most interesting player to get a look with the first-team offense, though, was Grant DuBose, who is the leader for the sixth receiver spot on the team after a strong camp and leading the Packers in receiving in their preseason opener. On Tuesday, Green Bay’s coaching staff not only praised DuBose’s receiving production but also his ability to block well on the perimeter when the ball wasn’t in his hands.

WR5 by the end of the season.

Not long ago.  Week?  Something like that.

And it's no big deal.  You were high on Melton.  As well you should have been.  Dubose hadn't done a thing.  Then one pre-season game happens and boom, here we are in the middle of Dubose-Mania.

Here's how I felt and still feel.  Melton brings something to the field that Dubose and Heath do not.  Speed.

Those other two?  More physicality and maybe more refined WR technique.

We shall see who the staff prefers.  I'm honestly good either way they go.  And I hope we stash a WR on the PS, but my guess is that with the tape out there of Heath and Melton in real games, that'll be tough.  So, maybe we trade one for a late round pick.

We know New England and Cleveland are looking for WR help! 😂 Possibly Pittsburgh as well.

I have to wonder if we don’t end up with a kicker this season that isn’t either one of these two. Doesn’t seem like we’re going to get better with either of them.

Applebee’s level kicking isn’t going to cut it.

You claimed Tom is top 5 at a premium position.  RT is not a premium position.

I'm not sure how you can argue that RT isn't a premium position.  Top 10 by position in terms of AAV.

QB: $46M/year+
RB: $7.25M/year+
WR: $24.25M/year+
TE: $10.5M/year+
LT: $18M/year+
RT: $17.5M/year+
OG: $16M/year+
OC: $7.45M/year+

If w'er going to tier this off, it's QB >>> WR > LT/RT/RG > TE > RB/OC.  Elite players get paid.

Honestly those numbers are surprising.

I think, if it worked out, I would want to pay my LT, RT, C, and the two guards in that descending order. It’s hard to believe there is such a big gap between guards and centers.

From GB reddit

Practice is finished - 2 hours and 8 minutes

General:

  • Full pads

  • Welcome to practice #15

  • Packers have waived LS Peter Bowden and S Tyler Coyle to make room for 2 signings: LB Chris Russell and RB Nate McCrary.

  • Christian Watson gets the crowd going this morning with a coordinated slow clap and a backflip. Happy 15th practice of camp.

  • Former Packers OT Billy Turner is here. FWIW, he’s keeping the door open to play another season.

Next Event: Joint practice with Denver. When?

Injured:

  • Edgerrin Cooper LB (hip)

  • Jarveon Howard RB (ankle)

  • Keshawn Banks DL (groin)

  • MarShawn Lloyd RB (groin)

Not Practicing / Limited:

  • Carrington Valentine CB (hamstring, limited)

Offense:

  • Red zone 1x1 highlights

    • Doubs with a sick catch along the sidelines against Ballentine. Got his feet in.

    • Wicks SKYWALKS for a leaping TD catch vs Nixon.

    • Heath TD vs Ballentine

    • Wilson TD vs Williams

    • Wayne with a sick one handed catch for a TD on a fade vs Green

    • Toure beats Zayne easy.

    • Doubs with a win vs Ballentine on an awesome anticipation ball by Love.

    • DuBose over Sapp for a TD.

    • Musgrave beats McKinney

    • Watson smokes Jaire. Great route. Easy separation.

    • Wicks and Nixon with an awesome battle. Great coverage but Wicks with a great hands carry. TD.

    • Sims beats Williams on a corner route.

    • Melton breaks Bullards ankles to the excitement of the wide receivers. TD.

    • Heath beats Davis for an easy TD

  • Good day for offensive line in 1 on 1s. Dillard had good reps vs Gary at RT and won vs Mosby at LT. Newman has been steady in drill all camp. Morton pulled off a wicked spin move to beat Telfort at RT

  • First play goes to Jacobs wide for a nice pickup.

  • Really nice block by Dillon against Smith on a Jacobs run. Seeing some 2 RB sets the last week.

  • Finally Josh Jacobs finds some daylight on a run left for a nice gain.

  • Love layers a throw perfectly between two defenders but it’s just outside of the reach of a diving Wicks.

  • Love with the keeper on a read option for a nice pickup. Defense didn’t see that coming.

  • Clifford rolls left, had Melton open but can’t connect on the throw on the run. Tough throw but it was there.

  • Run game is a major struggle right now for the offense.

  • Love perfect throw to Kraft on a corner route. Williams in coverage. Down at the 1. Delayed McDuffie blitz but O line holds up.

  • Love - Wicks - TD. Ballentine looks around for a flag for a push off but doesn’t get it. The connection between those two has been great in camp.

  • FWIW it seems like it’s been primarily Clifford with the 2s so far today.

  • Emanuel Wilson with another nice runwith the 2’s. Showed off the burst.

  • Pratt fires one for a comeback to Heath.

  • Pratt drops sidearm to Davis who catches but falls down in the process. Nice job by 17 to avoid the ball getting batted down.

  • Emanuel Wilson continues his strong camp with a shifty run inside for a solid gain.

  • Clifford to Hicks for a good pickup on the next play.

  • Pratt hits Heath over the middle. Slightly behind him but Heath adjusts for a nice pickup. May have been a fumble at the end of the play and Heath was slightly shaken up but doesn’t seem serious at all. No trainer by him.

  • Pratt to Melton next. Pratt low key on fire today.

  • Two minute. 1:40 left. 0 timeouts. First and 10. Ball on own 35. Down by 7. 1’s up first.

    • Love complete to Doubs short. Clock ticks.

    • Love complete to Jacobs short. First down. Clock ticks.

    • Love competes to Jacobs who makes a one handed catch along the sideline. Gain of 7. OOB

    • 1:01 left.

    • Love to Musgrave on a corner route. Complete and OOB. Beat McDuffie.

    • First down. Ball on opposing 35. 0:56 left.

    • Incomplete to Jacobs.

    • Love to Watson for 10. First down. Clock ticks.

    • Incomplete to Watson. Ballentine in coverage. May have had some contact.

    • Love to Musgrave short. Clock ticks.

    • Love to Wicks over the middle. Complete. Clock ticks and the clock runs out. Defense gets the stop.

  • 2’s up next. Clifford at QB. Only down 3 in this scenario.

    • Clifford to DuBose for 10. Clock ticks.

    • Clifford hell of a seam pass to Sims. Big gain. Clock ticks.

    • Clifford checkdown to Merriweather. Good gain clock ticks.

    • Clifford to DuBose. First down. Clock ticks.

    • Clifford almost sacked by Mosby. Gets it off incomplete.

    • 27 seconds left. 2nd and 10. Ball at the opposing 12.

    • Toure comes up with a catch but out of bounds to the right of the end zone.

    • Christian Young sack. Clock ticks.

    • Special teams runs on to try and get a FG off. Travis Glover didn’t get off the field. Likely too many men. Joseph misses but the uprights were still moving as they tried to get it back on the field. Not sure how to count that one but defense wins either way.

Defense:

  • Red zone 1x1 highlights

    • King pbu on Toure

    • Jaire breaks up a pass for Watson

    • McKinney pbu vs Musgrave

    • Davis with a late pbu vs DuBose. DuBose has the td but Davis knocked it away at the very end.

    • Rochell awesome coverage on Hicks.

  • Quay is doing team drills today.

  • McDuffie all over a Jacobs run. He’s been awesome in run defense

  • Jacobs toss outside - defense all over it again.

  • Quick motion throw to Kraft. Jaire all over it.

  • McDuffie again with a run stop. This time on Dillon. Dudes been all over the place.

  • Now Emanuel Wilson loses yards on a run. Packers run defense is absolutely dominating right now.

  • Play action checkdown to E Wilson and there’s three defenders waiting for him.

  • Clifford quick outside to Melton. Ballentine there for the quick stop.

  • Jonathan Ford busts into the backfield on a Merriweather run to disrupt the play.

  • E Williams all over a dump off to Dillon.

  • LVN is having a nice start to practice. He and McDuffie combine for a stop if Wilson for no gain.

  • Christian Young all over a wr screen to Melton.

  • Offense tries a quick throw outside throw to Toure. Guess what - defense all over that too.

  • Gary with back to back run stops behind the LOS. One on Jacobs. One on Dillon.

  • Love to Doubs on a fade. Jaire PBU.

  • Pratt fires again over the middle to Toure on a great throw - Williams knocks it out at the very end though. Incomplete

  • Pratt with a dime deep down the right sidelines. King was in good coverage and it was a contested play but one Melton needs to find a way to come down with.

  • Love gets TJ Slaton to jump with a hard count. Takes a shot over the middle knowing he has a free play - McDuffie skies to tip the ball and it falls perfectly for Quay for the pick.

  • Next play Love gets immediately pressured by Smith - throws one up for Musgrave and it looks like it’s going to be complete but Jaire breaks on it and makes the beautiful pick along the sidelines.

  • Packers running a bunch of read option today. It’s worked decently but Arron Mosby was all over that one on Clifford for a TFL.

Special Teams:

  • Alex Hale is still here today. The Packers needed to make two corresponding roster moves with their two new free agent additions. Hale is not one of them. We’ll keep an eye on any players not at practice.

  • Both veteran kickers start 2-of-3.

  • Carlson goes 2 for 3 (made 33 and 49, missed 55)

  • Joseph goes 1 for 3 (made 47, missed 49 and 55)

  • Joseph goes 1/3 - he’s 3/6 on the day

  • Carlson goes 2/3 - he’s 4/6 on the day

  • Totals for camp:

    • Greg Joseph: 50/60 - 83.3%

    • Anders Carlson: 48/60 - 80.0%

    • Alex Hale: 10/15 - 66.7%

Media:

Interviews:

  • Matt LaFleur: Presser

    • Right now, the plan is to give Sean Clifford first crack at it Sunday in Denver & then Michael Pratt.

    • Adam Stenavich called plays last week & he'll call it again, per LaFleur. "It's great experience. When I worked with Sean McVay, he afforded me that opportunity,"

    • Matt LaFleur said Packers have taken the same approach for the past couple years in preseason that Jerod Mayo did this week with the Patriots. If you need to play in the preseason and you get into a joint practice fight, you won’t play. Packers practicing with Broncos on Friday.

    • Says Carrington Valentine will be in individuals today.

    • Said the only one-on-ones that will take place when the Packers and Broncos practice this week is 0-line vs. D-line. He said the other one-on-ones can lead to skirmishes and he's having a zero tolerance policy regarding fighting.

    • Has been impressed with Packers rookie CB Kalen King: "He's really instinctive. He's a really good football player. The more opportunities he gets, the more he shows up and makes plays."

    • Jacob Monk "should be good to go,"

    • Says he anticipates Packers LB Quay Walker to return to practice today.

So I guess we all acknowledge that having an elite WR is 25% more valuable than having an elite LT?

Having 5 elite WRs on rookie contracts likely gives us an advantage and the ability to pay other positions rather than overpay WR's, who are a dime a dozen, unless you don't have one.

OT's both LT and RT, are not a dime a dozen. If all things are equal, you pay your LT first and then your RT.

IMO, these are the positions you pay: QB, EDGE RUSHER1. LT, CB1, EDGE RUSHER2, RT, CB2. Then see what you have left over. The problem teams run into is they overpay these positions for guys who are not elite at their respective position.

To me, the selection of Morgan points to Gute planning to extend one of the current OT's, but not both.  I don't expect GB to move on from Tom, which leaves Walker as the odd man out.  With the natural jump positional contracts take every year, I expect Tom's next contract to be over 20M AAV.  Extending Myers at ~8M AAV just makes more sense to me than extending Walker at roughly the same 20M+ AAV it's going to take to extend Tom.

My thoughts on this are 100% subject to change based on how the OL plays 2024.
