Peter Bukowski -   Romeo Doubs has been the most targeted wide receiver for the Packers this season and Christian Watson is T2. The "Aaron Rodgers won't throw to rookies" narrative taking L's already.

I found this stat somewhat amazing. Outside of Watson taking tosses in the backfield, neither player has seemed to be much in the passing game.

It’s because their touches are manufactured. Watson is jet sweep guy and Doubs is WR screen guy.

numbers agree with Peter but you also have to look at the situations too.

Absolutely, but it makes sense in the beginning to get them touches in ways that they don’t have to understand too much nuance or scramble when things go off schedule. Cobb only had 20/68 snaps last game but was in there on 3rd down and likely RZ and that paid off for us. The rooks will get more snaps and more diversity in their diet as these games come along, it’s good not to have to force them into even if it would accelerate their learning curve a bit. They will get better and get smarter within the offense as the season rolls.

Agreed, but Peter’s framing is highly miss leading. He writes as though Rodgers would throw to the rookies in a do or die situation. Or in every situation for that matter, when in fact all of their touches are highly managed and manufactured. Which like you said is great to bring the rookies along slowly.

However no one is thinking Rodgers would bypass Doubs or Watson on a WR screen because he doesn’t “throw to rookies”. So his straw man argument of he doesn’t throw to rookies is just wrong.

Better measurable would be looking a game situations and firstly see who is in the huddle and then secondly who he throws to. By just the eye test Cobb is number 1 go to. With no clear number 2 between Lazard and Watkins yet.

Understood but it speaks to how limited our passing game has been. If these guys are challenging the top of the list - with their small scale "receptions" - we've not exactly been busting our passing game out yet.

It's true enough that the rookies are getting their fair share of touches.  Probably a tick higher than I would have guessed heading into week 1.  They were never going to dominate the targets as rookies.  3-5 targets per game for each of them is fine.

Can't help but wonder what Watson's target numbers might be had he caught that 1st pass.  I expect both MLF and Arod would have been wanting to try that again sooner rather than later.

Lazard being out week one also played a role. I like the way we have been bringing the rooks into the game

Tom Silverstein -    The Packers are signing ILB DQ Thomas to their practice squad, source said. Highly recruited UDFA from Middle Tennessee St., who received $130K guarantee to sign with Jets, according to reports. Jets released him from practice squad. 6-2, 216 fast LB who had 20.5 sacks at MTS.

WR Travis Fulgham is the player released to make room for Thomas.

Jacob Morley -   Defensive Stops = tackles that constitute a "failure" for the offense.
A PFF stat - one that I like more than others.

Quay Walker in coverage: 5 stops

Most by any rookie after 2 games, and 3rd in the NFL.

Quay Walker's total "stops": 7

Most by any rookie, t-5th in NFL

Packers have 0!  Blitzes.

Not they are running 0 blitzes all the time.  They have never blitzed.

I may be thinking about this wrong, but the Packers are currently 31st in pass rush win rate.  If they were getting to the QB with no blitzes, super bowl, but it appears maybe we should start blitzing or something.

That was my point in the week 2 other games thread. With the play Burks made.

Id like to see these manufactured touches be something more aggressive. Have Watson and Watkins run coverage out with Doubs coming in behind them wide open.

there are scheme plays that can get guys opened 10-15 yards down the field.

Early on… a quick screen here or jet sweep there to get them a touch and get hit… to feel like they are in the game. All for it! But if their touches need to be soooo highly curated, we aren’t likely to see an improved offense until very late in the year.

For as glowing as Rodgers talked about Doubs, I would expect him to be involved more and getting more looks in the regular offense. Completely understand the Watson stuff. He will need to go thru a month of practices with Rodgers before he gets going, given the time missed.
