VonKarman
Lamar is doing the perfect strategy. He'll get more money the later he signs his contract. And even if he breaks his leg (just like Dak did) or sexually harasses women, he'll still get the bag. Is probably the feeling of every front office person in the NFL though, Jackson needs a buffer to take the emotion out of it for him. Nothing ideal about franchise tagging him twice either. he will be worth top 5 average money next year and then 120% of that will still be fine. after that his explosiveness will probably have run its course
incognito_man
Baltimore is wise not to overpay for an aging RB. Would be an especially prudent move to trade him for a haul next year.

I could actually see a trend starting in the NFL where if you aren't ultra-elite, you get moved for picks during your 5th year option. Arizona made a mistake extending Murray. He's got some time left but a long term deal for Baltimore is pretty risky.

At least part of that harkens from his legal troubles, a thing we really have no reason to suspect will afflict Mr. Jackson.

Correct. But for a running QB, 2+ years off of not getting tackled helps to prolong the career.
Old Guy
In a what have you done for me lately league, Jackson's 2021 season was awful by QB standards. 16/13 TD/INT, Rating 87, Completion % 64.4. He's never completed more than 66% of his passes in a season. Truth be told he's a better RB than a QB and we know what RB's get paid. Go ahead and pay this guy 50 million a year. His legs are going to go in the next few years as far as being elite as a running quarterback then what do you have?

You left out the part about him being terrible in the playoffs. 1-3 W/L record, 3 TD, 5 INT, 68.3 passer rating.
HokieHigh
he could still develop as a passer. good coaching can go a long way. there is no reason to pay him until he does.

How? It's year 5 and nobody has done anything to change his throwing motion. You can't keep executing the same poor fundamentals and expect a different result. Sandy
Apparently the Ravens offered Jackson 6 years, $290m+ with $133m guaranteed, which is more than Wilson or Murray got, and he turned it down because it wasn't fully guaranteed like Watson's deal. Lamar Jackson, you are stupid.
