I wanted us to keep the rookie kicker around. We desperately need a long term answer at that position.

i know you don't mean to do this, but you have posted a lot over the years on different players that show an age discrimination bias. whaaat?

yep. you don't know a thing about the rookie kicker we dropped, i betcha. may not even know his name. but because he is YOUNG you feel he has value.

think about it...

Things we learned from this resigning.

1. We will continue to be heavy 12 and 22. We needed a healthy 3rd TE

2. Brett Jones is valuable back-up. But a back-up believed around the league no matter how well his preseason was.

3. Our young rookie DT and OL are very sought after by this coaching staff, and there is a reason why they have not let them try and slide to the practice squad.

I'm not sure what you mean by long-term?  Walsh could have been considered "long-term" since he was with them for 5 years...otherwise, they haven't had a kicker last longer than Longwell's 6 years since Fred Cox.  So, they've managed to get by without a long-term answer.

Chase McLaughlin. He nailed a 54 yard FG against us this preseason. I'm just tired of our team not having a long term answer at the Kicker position.

I know it may seem that way, but I try take each player/position at an individual basis (except kicker). I never had an age issue with Favre at 41, Peterson at 31, Berger at 35 or Pat Williams at 37.

In an ideal world, a younger roster means longevity for key players, but that's not always the case with free agency and yearly roster turnover.

But, I guess at 27 I'm still young enough to even care a little bit about a player's age! Haha

It’s obvious that teams prefer younger players, especially to take advantage of rookie contracts. It’s why the Vikes drafted a long snapper and have consistently drafted specialists. The player on the rookie contract will be half the cost. As free agent contracts continue to explode, more teams should take advantage of rookie contracts.

Next year, we may see a lot youth coming in when you consider the money tied to vets like Reiff, Rudolph, Joseph, Griffen, and Rhodes. You hate to lose quality players but it’s inevitable when you’ve got a good team and a $30M QB. Isn’t MN the 6th youngest team?

safe!

Yeah it was smart of them to do that, Dillon is not some amazing player as a pass catcher so doubt anyone takes him off the PS.  And putting Jones back on the roster is good since he cannot go on the PS and provides some depth at C or OG.  Makes the most sense and if a TE gets injured Dillon can easily come out.  I am sure they like the blocking enough of Smith in that first game to be comfortable sending Dillon down.  He made some solid down field blocks a few times I thought.

Jarrett played great against that Viking OL, honestly Elflein was the one only real problem in that game.  O'Neill did not notice him making mistakes or Reiff so that is good, and Bradbury is a rookie still so one can expect that, but Elflein looked bad more than once but not sure Jones could play guard that well.  Dozier I think in a week or two should get a shot for a little bit if Elflein keeps playing so poorly.  Kline I am not a huge fan of but at least he looks better than freaking Elflein does.

Kline looked great to me. Upon re-watching the game a few times, Elflein was decent though obviously made some errors. On one play Elflein completely pancaked Jarrett into Bradbury and Bradbury needed to lay on him when he fell down. Instead, due to egregious athleticism, Jarrett got a pressure on Cousins. I think if the coaches realize Elf’s limitations he’s serviceable, just can’t expect him to make hyper athletic reach blocks.

I was pleasantly surprised by Kline’s play. I expect Bradbury to have some struggles as a rookie but he looks so promising.

Elflein is still clearly a liability and doesn’t have the athleticism to thrive in this system. Hopefully Samia can get in there soon enough, or at the very least, Dozier. Would love to see Samia grab that LG spot long term.

I know nothing about Dozier. Does he profile as more athletic than Elf? Same with Samia. All I saw from Samia was a great first punch and a pretty nasty attitude. It was against backups so who knows how that translates.

Pat Elfein:

Dakota Dozier:

Dru Samia:

Really isn’t much of a difference between Dozier and Elfein athletically.
