2018 Vikings Draft Prospects - Offensive Line

Why do people still believe that Barr offers anything as an edge rusher? It’s a skill he’s never shown to be proficient at.

Barr may be the size of many edge rushers, but he’s an off the ball linebacker.

EDIT: Barr has 10.5 career sacks, and none of them have come from the outside, or as an edge rusher. 7 have come from A gap blitzes, 2 have come from QB scrambles where Barr gets to the QB before he reached the LoS, and 1.5 have come on B gap blitzes.

Even the idea of a 3rd down outside pass rush specialist doesn't fit with what Zimmer usually schemes up when he sends pressure. His blitz packages almost always involve his DEs collapsing the pocket while containing the QB. They don't have to beat the tackle to the outside, just keep the QB in the pocket so that other rushers (LBs up the middle, slot defenders like Smith off the edge) come free.

The bigger need is a DE who can bump inside to DT and win one-on-one against guards. Robison didn't generate much from that position last year. Griffen could do it (he was great in that role in the Allen-Robison days), but then they'd need another true DE to play Griffen's position. Given current personnel, I'd try Hunter and Bower at DE and Griffen at DT (plus Richardson) long before I put Barr on the LOS.

This is why I’d be very tempted to draft Taven Bryan if he were available at 30, and o-linemen like Wynn, Williams, and McGlinchey were gone.

I don't think Bryan would be a good edge player in this system - he'd be better suited as a full-time 3T or 5T in a one-gap, odd, front.

I wouldn’t be looking at him as a true edge player. He’d primarily be used as a 3T in passing situations. You could also use him as a 5T in goal line and short yardage run situations.

He’d them give insurance if the team is unable to retain Richardson.

That’s a pretty hefty investment for a backup who would have no position unless you’re already certain that you’re not bringing Richardson back after this season.

He would be a situational player, only.

Depth along the defenisve line has proven to be important enough to warrant such an investment.

Look at what the Eagles did last year. They drafted Derek Barnett, despite having Curry, Long, and Graham on the roster.

My personal draft philosophy is evolving to the point where I’m not longer interested in drafting a position other than OL or DL in the 1st round (QB being the obvious exception).

Great play from your offensive and defensive lines leads to better play from all other areas of the field, and can mask other deficiencies. But it’s very hard to mask poor play along the lines, regardless of the talent on the rest of the field.

I'm mostly in the same boat. Give me the top pass rusher or OL available.

I'd consider CB as a likely option as well and I'm fine with that too if it means not having to pay Waynes around $10 million next year.

Long doesn't really belong in that category; and those are all pass rushers - edge defenders and could be on the field at the same time in packages. To me, that's a different animal than drafting a third defensive tackle. Plus, Curry (no longer there) and Graham were both going to be 30 years old going into this coming season, so age had to be taken into account. That was my caveat to you as well, they drafted likely knowing that one (two counting Long) likely wouldn't be there the following year). If the team believes Richardson is a one and done, then I'm all for drafting another 3T relatively high due to positional importance.

Very rarely do you see invest premium assets into three defensive tackles.

Do you think he would be a replacement for Barr or a DE?

I think Zimmer just likes having these athletes on defense that he can mold into his type of player. It's just a gut feeling I have about the Vikings taking him. Each year there's a few that stick out and I can immediately picture them playing for the Vikings. So far him and Billy Price are the ones that stick out to me.

I think Carter is definitely one I could envision here.
