The 2018 Kirk Cousins Megathread

The Jets wanted quarterback Kirk Cousins. They didn’t get him. They viewed Case Keenum as a potential fallback option. They won’t get him, either. So what will they do at quarterback?

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News notes that the focus will now shift to signing Josh McCown or Teddy Bridgewater, or taking a rookie high in the draft. The Jets currently hold the sixth overall pick.

Per multiple reports, quarterback Kirk Cousins will sign a three-year, $84 million deal with the Vikings. That’s an average of $28 million per year, $500,000 per year more than Jimmy Garoppolo will earn per year.

The deal for Cousins also will be fully guaranteed, which means that the Vikings will have to pay mostly all of that money into escrow at signing, as part of an outdated rule aimed at protecting players from potentially insolvent teams.

Cousins will never be insolvent. He made $19.95 million in 2016 and $23.94 million in 2017, and he’ll make another $84 million over the next three. That’s a total of $127.89 million and an average of $25.578 million.

Agent Mike McCartney says that Cousins will visit the Vikings once free agency opens.

“No final decisions have been made,” agent Mike McCartney said today. “The plan is to visit Minnesota first. That’s all we can say right now.”

It’s OK for Cousins to plan to visit Minnesota. It’s not OK for the plans for a visit to be actually made between Cousins and the Vikings. (A league source has confirmed that this rule is still on the books.) That’s one of the weird quirks of the negotiating window, during which teams are allowed to negotiate with a player’s agent, but during which arrangements for visits cannot be made.

Of course, it’s possible that Cousins has made his plans without an invitation. But if there’s any digital trail of flights, hotels, meal reservations, etc. — and if the NFL’s Arbitrary Wheel of Justice lands on “go get ’em” — the Vikings may find themselves in a bit of a predicament when the dust settles on their acquisition of the first healthy, sub-30 franchise quarterback in the history of free agency.

A fully guaranteed $84,000,000.00 contract....Man, Cousins better win the Super Bowl this season!!  Anything less will be a massive failure in my thinking.

Suh's contract with Miami ... was $60M guaranteed within the first 3 years ... and that's what he got.

People are overblowing this fully guaranteed thing.

We could have tacked on 2 more non-guaranteed years with player options in each... and it would be 60% guaranteed. Its just optics.

5 years / $140M total / $84M Guaranteed
