Curious which backs you put in that awesome top heavy 1-3 group besides Barkley and Guice...

Barkley / Guice - day 1

Michel / Chubb / Penny / Freeman - day 2

I want 1 of these guys on my team.

Jones / Walton - I like the potential. The rest are just role players for me.

This I agree with. If we're gonna take a back, it has to be a feature back, which is Michel, Chubb, Guice (won't drop to the 2nd though), or Penny.

Michel or Penny IMO is the best fit in round 2 for Gruden's offense.

Boilerplate guys and draft positions beside Jones, who some have as the 3rd best back in the draft, which is wrong in my opinion as well.

This is why I advocate for the trade down. Getting 4 picks in the top 100 will really help this team theoretically, meaning depending on the selections.

Really warming up to the idea of Michel in the 2nd. Was thinking about that earlier today.

I'm a Penny lover. If we can get him at the top of the 3rd I'd be ecstatic. I like Michel. Just think Penny is a better all around back which makes me think we won't be able to wait that long for him when players actually start getting picked. Two 2nd rd picks would be nice.

Trading down would be the perfect scenario. But finding a trade partner could be tough considering the QB action at the top.

Michel is a stud. It was hard for me to wrap my head around him this season at UGA. He's always just been a guy here. But his growth this season was something else. He's the real deal.

Me too. But I'd take Sony over him.

With Michel, what do you think changed? The main reason I'm wary is because this season seemed like an anomaly from him.

It could be tough and it could also fall our way very easily. I think there are more than 2 team that will wanna move. Just gonna have to wait.

Penny is a better player with more consistent production. More importantly I think Penny's vision, balance, running style and body type are more in tune with a bell cow back. Michel is a great play maker but I don't like his contact avoidance, upright running style and thinner lower body.

The way I look at it from the offense's point:

The NFL became a pass first league and defenses try to match that. That gives a strong opportunity for the teams, who go back to a strong running game as their base. Jags went pretty deep into the PO with a strong running game and quality defense. The Rams attack also feature Gurley and a really dangerous and consistent running game.

I think Gruden wants to establish a strong running game first and foremost.

1, He brought in Tom Cable, who is a running game specialist

2, He is keeping Lynch, who had a pretty solid 2nd half on a lucklaster offense and who is still able to carry the load for a year IMO

3, He is investing in the FB and blocking TE position, so I guess we will try to run a lot and from different personel groupings

4, He brought in some competiton for Washington and Richard for the back up, 3rd down RB role in Martin. I expect us keeping only one of these guys in the end as the 3rd won back. Richard is my "dog" in this race

5, I absolutely expect us to draft a running back in the middle (2nd-5th) of this draft. I think that guy will give Lynch a rotational mate and will take over in '19.

With a strong running game in place he will build up his passing game on Derek Carr's shoulders.

1, He will get Carr back to his '16 form (if not we are lost either way) with a diverse scheme and with play actions

2, He tries to get good route runners for Carr and also good teammates. Nelson is still a pretty efficient route runner, I can't really see why Crabs is a superior guy on the field and noone can say that Crabs is a better person off the field. Go and read Ted Nguyen's article about Nelson, where he also speaks about the Crabs-Nelson switch. Cooper should bounce back with his route running ability and work ethic. Grant is a good route runner, who opted for the Colts in the end. Hurns and Decker are also solid/good in that regard IMO.

3, The WR's will have less freedom under Gruden and the scheme will be more strick and complex, so he needs guys with good work ethic and good personality, attitude.

I know most will say that I'm way too optimistic here. I could have said "he should" or "he hopes to" instead of the "he wills", but I think that he made a good plan for his comeback and he will succedd. He might not, for sure...if he sucks then we are doomed for a few years for sure, but I just can't see the point to be dark and skeptical after every move we make.

Let it come together, let those beat writers write somethings after the first OTA's...let's see what we do in the draft, where gladly won't be any 30+ guys :)...let's see what we have come TC and in pre season...and still let's see what we have come September...till then let those "negative waves" fly...

I don't disagree with anything Rod said

Seems some of Raider nation (not on here )can’t handle hearing criticism or something that isn’t toeing the line. I’l defend him in this aspect Ken Norton was the DC for too long. Talent wise Conley went down not much else after that

I saw it earlier. I wouldn't take Rod Woodson's words as gospel or adding anything unique to the current conversation. He's basically reiterating what every Gruden skeptic has already said:

  • It's 2018 not 1998
  • It's a passing league
  • Crabtree>Nelson
  • etc.

But honestly, I haven't yet seen anyone actually analyze what these moves mean and what Gruden actually meant by 1998. Gruden was a passing innovator. He regularly trotted out 3 wide receivers, and he routinely had Rich Gannon (who nearly broke Dan Marino's passing yardage record) throw to the running backs. Gruden was famous for doing the opposite of what people thought was logical at the time: he threw the ball to set up the run. People calling him Jeff Fisher are lumping all once great re-tread coaches into the same category. Things Gruden was going in 1998 are still being done today.

I'm cautiously optimistic about how the roster has changed, but at least the team has a clear vision and direction with all the additions. There is a complexion being built more than just players being brought in. Jordy Nelson, Keith Smith, and Derek Carrier all are very specific role players that attack specific parts of the defense. What's that other team that acquires players with specific roles in mind?
