The Often Overbearing, But Otherwise Ordinary Offensive Line

The Vikings are averaging 124 yards a game on the ground on 31 carries. Last season, the Vikings averaged 24 carries a game for just 75 yards a game. In 16 games, the Vikings rushed 380 times for 1,205 yards and nine touchdowns. They’re on pace to shatter those numbers this season. Through 11 games, they’ve already rushed 346 times for 1,369 yards and 12 touchdowns.

In 2009, the Vikes O-line started Bryant McKinnie, Hutch, Sullivan, Herrera, and Loadholt.  The offense put up 6,074 total yards of offense (379.6 per game) with 4,156 through the air and 1,918 rushing.  This team is on par with that!

A lot of the credit goes to the O-line -- it feels like an eternity has passed since we last had a reasonably stable O-line . . . 2012 was that, and that offense was nowhere near as balanced as this one is.

Vikes offense is 7th in rushing, 8th in scoring and 5 in total yards per game!   Seems like only yesterday we were begging to be a top-20 offense . . . so we had something to go with this defense.

Fewest sacks allow and 2nd in converting 3rd downs.

If the Vikes can sustain this level of offense with our top-5 Defense,  . . . it almost brings a tear to my eyes.:)

Across the board though, Philly's got as good or better stats, so it'll boil down to who's healthy and who takes care of the football if we meet them down the road.

Over a long season, there is never one event or decision that can be credited or blamed with the year’s outcome, but if you were ranking reasons that the Minnesota Vikings’ season has gone much better this year than last, you would put the decision to sign Riley Reiff and let Matt Kalil leave in free agency at the top of the list. Shortly after Kalil signed a five-year, $55.5 million contract with the Carolina Panthers, he made comments insinuating the Vikings’ offensive line coaches had not pushed him hard enough.

“(Matsko) is the first guy I’ve played for that kind of demands excellence from his offensive line room,” Kalil told the Charlotte Observer.

But that excellence hasn’t shown up on the field this year as Pro Football Focus ranks Kalil 44th of 56 qualifying tackles in pass blocking. They have graded him positively in just three of 13 games. Cam Newton has been sacked 28 times this season. In Carolina’s key matchup with the New Orleans Saints, the 2012 No. 4 overall pick committed two key penalties

Meanwhile Reiff just gave up his first sack of the season on Sunday against Atlanta (and head coach Mike Zimmer said Monday that the sack wasn’t entirely on Reiff). Case Keenum has been sacked just nine times total.

The Vikings offense currently ranks sixth in the NFL with 1,474 total rushing yards. But with four games left in the season, Minnesota has already eclipsed last year’s total of 1,205 rushing yards as a team.

Minnesota’s turnaround in the running game — from dead last in 2016 to sixth this season (122.8 yards per game) — is not only impressive, it’s historical. Not since Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk was drafted by the Colts in 1994 has an NFL team gone from the league’s worst run game to the top 10.

Vikings offensive linemen watched film Monday and it wasn’t pretty. Minnesota gave up a season-high six sacks in Sunday’s 31-24 loss at Carolina. Quarterback Case Keenum pointed the finger at himself after the game, saying he needs to get the ball out quicker, but those on the line did not agree.

Jeremiah Sirles: “We know that there’s nowhere to put the blame but at ourselves.”

Nick Easton: “We got a lot to improve on this week, so that the good part is we can learn from the film. Case is a great guy, but our job is to give him as much time as possible.”

Zimmer:  “When you have injuries, you’re going to have backup players in there. We’re not going to make an excuse for this game, or for players that come in or anything else. We’ll take ownership of what we did Sunday and we’ll move forward.”

It took guts for Spielman to jettison Alex Boone considering he had signed the veteran to a four-year, $26.8 million free-agent contract in March 2016. Boone, who started 14 games at left guard for the Vikings last season,  never seemed to be a great fit in Minnesota’s locker room. He was usually a willing quote, so the media had no issue with him, but it’s safe to say he seemed to rub some Vikings people the wrong way with his brash style.

It didn’t help that Boone saw himself as the leader of an offensive line that was absolutely atrocious last season. With the Vikings’ left tackle situation a mess, Boone told reporters he went to Zimmer and volunteered to play the position. Zimmer seemed less than thrilled with Boone’s suggestion when asked about it during his press conference.

Boone’s exit allowed the Vikings to move Nick Easton to left guard and use third-round pick Pat Elflein at center. Elflein has been outstanding and the Vikings reconstructed offensive line has been much improved. Easton is a better fit for what the Vikings decided to do in going away from the power-run scheme.

As for the offensive linemen, they don’t seem to have a spokesman any longer and that’s just fine with them.

Why would Zimmer have issue with Boone offering to play LT. Boone had experience at the position and he probably would have been better than Clemmings.

My interpretation: Do your own damn job well before trying to worry about doing someone else's job.

If you're viewed as the leader of a positional group like Boone was, and the group was obviously performing poorly, mainly because of the issues at Tackle, I still don't see how Boone offering constructive feedback is a bad thing. Many fans on this forum were calling for Boone to play LT. I understand Zimmers sentiment but if Boone felt he could stop the bleeding at LT, I think he should speak up as the supposed leader of the OL. Not like LT isn't the most important OL position.

Maybe a line of LT Boone, LG Easton, C Berger would have been better than what was thrown out there. Maybe the Vikes would have made the playoffs.
