Say you're leaving on the 17th of Feb for two weeks?

I might need to find a replacement for the commish duties or have the other guys pick it up while you're out.

Yup. LIS, wouldn't be an issue with regards to actually participating since things are timed out and I can plan, but yeah, won't be available with the same degree of frequency which could certainly impact the commish duties.  I made mention of it earlier, but I didn't think that we were going to get rolling that early tbh.

Right, I don't see managing a team to be an issue at all, and if I can get some extra help while you're out I don't see the commish being an issue either.  Might be able to get @D82 to help us out in your absence.

Pretty solid day of work.  Just about finished up with the compiling the player database and expected APY values.

Gonna use similar values that I did last year to determine APY values.  Basically, average of the top 3 with it being reduced the lower the pff grade becomes.  I think this worked out pretty well last year.

For example:

GRADE 34DE 34DT 34OLB 43DE
100% $15,669,750 $4,771,778 $22,841,667 $17,675,000
99% $15,513,053 $4,724,060 $22,613,250 $17,498,250

Maybe I missed this, How are we making the FA Bidding Max better? I remember some of the ridiculous FA Contracts last year.

If memory serves me, there was an issue after the first round that forced us to change the formulas.  Nate Solder's first year was 16m but something with the roster and workout bonuses allowed the subsequent years of the contract to be extremely inflated.  That was fixed immediately and to further prevent the headache of figuring out high bid I've done away with the roster and w/o bonuses for fa contracts.

However, I am looking at some other options that I think would curve spending without forcing contracts into a box.

In the past, as long a single contract didn't put your team in the red, it was accepted.  I'm looking at making it the total of the fa contracts.  So if you don't have the cap to cover every offer you make it won't be approved.

Also, looking at making the player's expected signing bonus a required amount. at least for the early rounds.

Aside from the Nate Solder and Kirk Cousin deals bidding wasn't too bad.  It sucked because those two contracts really put a hurting on tcmd's credit as being a solid mock to new members not familiar with this system.

If you've got any ideas on how to reduce the crazy bidding without putting a ceiling on the bidding I'm all ears.  I can't have a ceiling because all the teams would just bid the max, creating a tie.

Let me draw up some guidelines for this process.  Having to account for all of the contracts in your available cap might be a bit much, because we don't normally sign all of them anyway.

I'm thinking maybe the total of the top two contracts cannot exceed your available cap, rather than all of them.

Got a busy weekend and Monday coming up so it'll likely be middle of next week before I get rolling on this.

If I remember correctly I think sign ups were last couple of days in January and trading started about 10 days later. I seem to remember we started a little early and it created a gap in the schedule a little while in,

I believe you're right about that.  We all got excited and started early and we had to drag out the bidding rounds to make it work.  I'll try to work on the schedule middle of this week.

*Yellow denotes they were signed as FAs.

**Players that were traded for then extended weren't counted.

***Hicks and Gilliam were signed as FAs, but they've since signed another extension which has made them more expensive than they were when they signed as FAs.

So you can see its fairly common for teams to have a FA signing within the top 3 of its cap for 2018.  It is however fairly rare for a team to have the top player on their cap as a signed FA.  Only 7 teams in the NFL had this occur, and Nick Foles is kind of a special case considering he can back to the team that drafted him.

Of those 7, the most egregious is the Kirk Cousins contract, which is probably a historical anomaly, but starting QBs of that level rarely hit FA (I'm not here to debate whether Cousins is a good QB or not, but its obvious the perception during FA last year is that he was).  So let's just throw out that contract because its a once in a lifetime occurrence.  That leaves us with these comps:

Broncos %
Case Keenum $15,000,000
Derek Wolfe $10,925,000 37.30%
Von Miller $10,125,000

Jaguars
Calais Campbell $17,500,000
Malik Jackson $15,500,000 12.90%
AJ Bouye $15,406,250

Rams
Ndamukong Suh $14,500,000
Lamarcus Joyner $11,287,000 28.47%
Aqib Talib $11,000,000

Trumaine Johnson $10,000,000
Josh McCown $10,000,000 0.00%
Kelvin Beachum $9,500,000

Eagles
Nick Foles $13,600,000
Fletcher Cox $11,348,000 19.84%
Jason Peters $10,666,666

Redskins
Josh Norman $16,800,000
Trent Williams $13,579,005 23.72%
Ryan Kerrigan $12,450,000

Case Keenum's contract is the strongest of the bunch in terms of being so much higher than every other contract on payroll by that team.  His contract was 37.3% higher than the 2nd highest cap on the Broncos payroll this season.

NEW RULE: So I propose this, make a rule that you cannot sign a player that is paid more than 40% more than the 2nd highest paid player on your roster.

That will cap team's bidding, and it also won't give you the same ceiling for every team (causing problems with ties).

Now I can already see the complaints with this rule, what about teams that have a $20+ mil QB vs teams with a $10 safety as their top paid player!

To enact this rule we're going to need a second rule.  The team with its top 3 players taking up the most % of cap this season was the Carolina Panthers.  They had 28.1% of their cap tied up in their 3 players.

NEW RULE 2: Your top 3 paid players cannot be more than 30% of the cap for next year.

I'd like to hear people's thoughts on this idea.

Seems Like a lot of work, lol. Especially for teams that currently are like that regardless. Not gonna release your top players to get under that Percentage.

There isn't a single team in the NFL over that percentage.
