1984 Week 10 Los Angeles Raiders (7-2) at Chicago Bears (6-3)

Sunday Nov 4, 1984
Start Time: 1:00pm
Stadium: Soldier Field

Bone crushing game between two of the top squads in the NFL. The defending champion Raiders squared off against the Bears in a heavyweight showdown. Bears dominated the Raiders early, and often via defense and the running of Walter Payton. The Raiders were sacked 9 times, which added to the Bears league lead of 38. They had already sacked the Vikings the previous week 11 times, giving the Bears 20 sacks in two weeks. Raiders were missing three key contributors in QB Jim Plunkett, WR Cliff Branch, and LB Matt Millen. Bears took full advantage, but also lost starting QB Jim McMahon in the process. All in all this was a good game, and really helped solidify the Bears as a rising power in the NFC for the next few years to come.

1977 AFC Championship Oakland Raiders (12-3) at Denver Broncos (13-2)

Sunday Jan 1, 1978
Start Time: 2:00pm
Stadium: Mile High Stadium

Very underrated championship game that doesn't get enough love. Game went down to the wire on a key 3rd and 3 play with just a couple of minutes to go. This Broncos team was a terror all year long defensively, and it's remarkable that they were able to dispatch the prior two Super Bowl champs in the playoffs on their way to Super Bowl 12.

2004 Week 15 Tennessee Titans (4-9) at Oakland Raiders (4-9)

Sunday Dec 19, 2004
Start Time: 4:15pm
Stadium: McAfee Coliseum
Attendance: 44,299

Two bad teams with bad defenses, and as a result two lackluster quarterbacks pop off. This is of course the year where Billy Volek filled in for an injured Steve McNair, and put up impressive numbers over the course of a few weeks against bad defenses. Kerry Collins for the Raiders was the ex-Giants cast off trying to revitalize his career with the silver and black. Titans WR Drew Bennett had 13 catches for 160 yards, and two touchdowns in this game which was part of a 3 week stretch where he had 28 receptions, 517 yards, and 8 touchdowns. That is arguably the best 3 game stretch for a WR ever. Anyway, "good" game if you see it for what it is.

Was a lot of fun to watch that stretch unfold, even with as terrible as our defense was. The game against KC in that 3 game stretch that NFL Throwback also uploaded had quite a few fireworks too:

I'm surprised Volek never got a team to give him a starting chance. His best chance was going in to the 2006 season, but he and Jeff Fisher had a falling out so it wound up being Kerry Collins starting that season before Vince Young finally took over.

Volek's memorable moments didn't end with this season though. In 2007 season(playoffs in 2008 of course), he wound up coming in for an injured Rivers(of course being the time Rivers tore his ACL but still wound up toughing it out to play against the undefeated Pats in the AFCCG) to lead the Chargers on a game winning drive over the Colts in the divisional playoffs.

This was a gem. The day Corey Dillon broke the single game rushing record with 278 rushing yards. Walter Payton had the previous record at 275 yards. It's been broken twice since then by Jamal Lewis (295), and Adrian Peterson (296). However, Dillon had over 12 yards a carry, which I think is still the highest average for the highest yardage. Bengals would only win 4 games in 2000. This was one of them, and the only one against a team with a winning record.

1985 Week 1 San Diego Chargers (0-0) at Buffalo Bills (0-0)

Sunday Sep 8, 1985
Start Time: 4:00pm
Stadium: Rich Stadium

Opening week of the 1985 season, and the Chargers visit the Bills. Both teams were looking to bounce back and make the playoffs for the first time since the 1982 (Chargers), and 1981 (Bills). Chargers still had the same household names in their offense in Fouts, Joiner, and Chandler. Kellen Winslow wouldn't return until midseason, but Eric Seivers was a quality fill-in. Their defense was terrible as usual. The Bills on the other hand had a few young players that would soon become stars a few years later in Darryl Talley, Andre Reed, and of course first overall pick that year Bruce Smith. Former Rams QB Vince Ferragamo was the starter as Jim Kelly was still in the USFL.

This game had some great highlight plays. Charlie Joiner in the second half makes a nutty acrobatic catch. The contest comes down the final few seconds with Buffalo driving for a go-ahead touchdown. They come up short as they run out of time though.

Neither team returned to the playoffs. This was the final season the Air Coryell Chargers were an offensive powerhouse, as they finished 1st in points/yards. Offense finally ran out of steam the following year, and for years to come. The Bills fired head coach Kay Stephenson four games in the year, and the Bills went 2-14 for the second straight year mostly under backup coach Hank Bullough. Chargers/Bills would actually play each other one more time later in 1985 due to the schedule setup back then, but wouldn't square off again until the 1998 season, which means Jim Kelly never played San Diego.

Not an NFL game... but a throwback game from the 90s and a game that lived up to its immense hype:

1993, Florida State at Notre Dame. Perhaps one of the greatest games I ever experienced live, the one game that hooked me on the sport.
