Top 3: Best and Worst things about your state

Recommended Posts

Oklahoma good:

1. Low, low cost of living.

2. Friendly people. I haven’t experienced this so much myself (meaning in comparison to other places) as I’ve had multiple travelers who say this is the thing they notice the most.

3. Strong sports culture

4. Extremely, extremely lax marijuana laws

5. Good casinos (more of a personal thing than an overall good probably).

Oklahoma bad:

1. The hick/podunk stereotype. Both the fact that it does exist and that it’s also automatically applied to you

2. The weather. Especially the humidity. I’ll also wrap allergies into this one.

3. Certain other things I’m not allowed to discuss here

I'll do my hometown instead of the whole state, Richmond VA:

Pros

1. We're one of the oldest cities in the country so we have a lot of cool old architecture (sure some of it was burned in the Civil War but a lot of it survived).

2. It has a great central (east coast) location.  A two hour drive to the west and you're in the Appalachian mountains, two hours east you're at Virginia beach.  I can drive to NYC in 5 hours.  I can drive to Atlanta in 8 hours.

3. Lots and lots of local breweries.  We have over 100 breweries in the city.  The beer culture is great.

4. The James River goes right through the city which provides some cool amenities like white water rapids, cool islands and fishing spots.

5. Its a pretty great city to use a bicycle in.  In 2015 Richmond hosted the 2015 UCI Road World Championship (a cycling race) and the city installed a bunch of great cycling trails and designated lanes leading up to the race.

Cons

1. There are a lot of hipsters.

2.  The inner city schools need a lot of work.

3.  The diversity has a long way to go.

4. Our airport doesn't have a lot of direct flights.

5. Public transportation is quite poor.  They just opened a new "Pulse" bus system but it isn't great as its limited where it takes you.

Don't want to get too far off topic but I'm going to a wedding outside Richmond in a couple weeks.  Going to head down from Philly a day or two early and want to either find a quiet lake to stay at or a secluded cabin with some hiking.  Any recommendations for cool areas along the general path from Philly to Richmond?

PM me exactly where the wedding is so I have a better idea what area and also so we don’t derail the thread.

the state of new south wales, australia! i won’t talk about gun control or universal healthcare or our lack of crippling student loan debt because they’re national... oops!

good:

1) sydney is a beautiful city, right on the water so it mixes that city vibe with the waterfront, and it is beach water all along sydney ten minutes from the CBD as opposed to all that dirty bay water in a lot of big cities across the world

2) regarding the entire greater sydney area (bigger than just the CBD, it stretches an hour give or take in each direction of sydney barring east because that’s all beaches), it’s such a multicultural city; little italy at leichhardt to chinatown in haymarket to the strong middle eastern influences in auburn and further southwest, there is a hotspot in sydney for almost every cultural background to try the food and experience all the cultural influences

3) there’s so much to do and so many natural beautiful things: i live an hour and a half out of sydney in the blue mountains, far south there’s the snowy mountains, beaches up and down the coast, and ranches and property estates both real far inland but an hour from the CBD as well... it has every climate so something for everyone

bad:

1) i can not stress enough how bad our public transport is unless you live in the eastern suburbs or the north shore (ie where the rich people are). living as i said an hour and a half out of the CBD for me is an hour and a half out of uni and i commute daily and it just sucks. the government has ordered new trains that don’t fit the tracks on the blue mountains line so they have to space the tracks on the entire line by like a foot extra it’s just farcical. we used to have a monorail in the CBD and they got rid of it because they hate fun.

2) we’re in a bit of massive drought right now because climate change and our governments are too cowardly (read; backed by the polluting companies) to make a change... tbf this is much worse in other states such as queensland

3) generally as a rule western sydney has been neglected and ignored by governments until it’s convenient for them... some of the urban sprawl leads to lifeless suburbs where everything is homogenous and stepford homely on the outside but in reality the economics of the suburbs can’t sustain themselves and they get quite run down quick, but that’s all fine because the state government gave their friends in the eastern suburbs new roads or what ever while ours are run down

Love Syndey.

Was expecting you to put house prices (or just cost in general) in bad? Seems like it's gone a bit crazy. You should put great asian food and amazing coffee on your good list.

I spent time in Manly, and also Bronte. Just a fantastic atmosphere - laid back, outdoors, barbies on beach, decent bars in the evening. Essex boys and Aussies have a lot in common! xD
