Cuba Smugglers

Overview

It has been a rough season. We haven’t coached well but the main issue is team building. Getting the team ready to play all season has been a challenge as a result. In do or die mode as a loss v IC ends a reasonable hope to enter the playoffs.

Motivation

Win to remain relavent

Offense

All hands on deck to block the edge players. We are bringing extra lineman a into the game to help against Khalil Mack and Myles Garrett. The extra guys show our commitment to the run. Dalvin Cook reaching the second level can yield success in big ways. This defense is known to be suspect at the LB spots and usually brings safety help in the running game. We remain committed to establishing a run first approach. Tre’Davious White is good enough to win some snaps vs Julio Jones, so we’re going to use that matchup as an establishment of other weapons. If Devin McCourty helps Julio target share goes into 6-8 targets. He’s been matchup proof this year so the help decides how much we can target other players. DeSean Jackson and Kirk Cousins form one of the top deep connections in BDL, so Adoree Jackson will be challenged vertically to see if we hang with Jackson. This can also draw penalties (Jackson has had success  William Jackson, high level CB). The common theme with Ivory Coast is they have Malcolm Butler who’s been roughed up a few games. Donte Moncrief has been strong this season as Jacksonville’s top WR. He should draw targets in hopes we can exploit this one on one matchup.  His target share could be boosted as we look to have adjusted safety help leading to Julio and Dalvin Cook as receivers. This will help in the redzone but is mostly effective because this will likely open up DeSean Jackson getting post routes(3 TD on said routes.

We mentioned the edge rush as something we want to address. We are including new weapons like Jaylen Samuels on sweep patters and shovel tosses to wear down the pressure. Moving sideways on those guys is questionable but the ability to get the ball away quickly helps nullify their upfield presence. Rob Havenstein has been a premier player with zero penalties this season and should win some reps against either guy. We are going to chip both guys. With the willingness to make life easy our H-back will motion to the edge and we follow it with a roll out. This should greatly help in regard to making fast decisions. One final wrinkle is in our 6 OL set near the redzone we want to take advantage of an aggressive pass rush with a play action screen to Jason Peters

TLDR: Statement game. We haven’t had much of a running game this year. We will still run the ball with Dalvin Cook. Play action passes to Julio. Regular attempts to Julio. Deep posts to DeSean Jackson have replicated high success. Attack where the safeties are not located as Cousins has success targeting deep. Read final sentence of offensive writeup.

Defense

The hype loves to come around for other teams pass rushes, but we may boast the top front 4 DL in BDL. This was an area Ivory Coast controlled in our first meeting. They’ve suffered some key injuries since and they don’t use TEs as chips. We’re circling Eric Kush as a possible liability to stopping Nick Chubb. With a running game that churns, we are dealing with a nice offense in terms of balance. Unlike the NFL, Luck’s protection is more reminiscent of the 2016 versions of Indy. As a result, we can get pressure on him enough to force throws and possibly cause some turnovers because of immense pressure. Thomas Davis has been the coverage LB we’ve needed for so long and his high level of plays gives us a second level player whom forces teams to go in different directions. Kyle Van Noy is highly gifted in versatility. He’ll mostly lineup as an off ball LB with blitz assignments or his hand on the dirt on no more than 10 snaps.

Our secondary isn’t the level it has been in recent memory. Nonetheless Richard Sherman has played at an elite level through all traditional measures. His reluctance of targets has been evident from all QBs this season. Bryce Callahan has been an impact player in the slot. Since we rarely shadow, it’ll be hard for a Luck to win throwing to the right or winning in the slot. Brandin Cooks takes plenty responsibility from Luck with his YAC but Callahan should win some of the vertical targets. It bears mentioning that our pass rush is especially critical in this area, so those deeper routes will lie on our defense as a whole. If there’s one area we can be picked upon it’s the RCB position. Whether it’s Dunbar or Kenny Moore that player has been competitive all season. If Jeffery or Cooks own most of their snaps on that side we can counter with LaMarcus Joyner playing deep. Finally, Derwin James has been so good, it’s a shame we’re wasting his talent. He’ll move everywhere, and his particularly his role is to defend the middle of the field. We envision this team running the ball heavily and mixing short passes for YAC purposes. James can have success in this area. Morgan Burnett and Ronnie Harrison will replace Kyle Van Noy inside on passing downs. This is also our response to JJ Samuel, a very similar gadget skill set to Cooks.

TLDR: This is a statement game. We haven’t been better than average this year on this side of the ball. Kyle Van Noy stops run. Safeties stop pass. Get Fletcher Cox and Calais Campbell pass rush on Eric Kush. Hughes-Cox-Campbell-Peppers pass rush sets give 4 high level pass rushers together and a chance to frustrate Luck repeatedly.

Ivory Coast Black Rhinos

Ivory Coast Black Rhinos Gameplan:

Offense
Primary Formation: 3 Wide "20" Personnel
- Offensively we will want to come out and spread the field a bit, utilizing 3 wide receivers. Alshon Jeffery will typically be by himself on one side, with Brandin Cooks and the third receiver (starting will be Curtis Samuel) paired up on the other side. Nick Chubb gets the start and will receive the bulk of the carries this week. Anthony Sherman will join him in the backfield. Andrew Luck is going to be splitting his time roughly 1/3 under center, 1/3 out of the pistol (Sherman next to him, Chubb lined up behind him), and 1/3 out of shotgun.

Running Game Focus- Cuba fields a very stout defensive line, so we are going to be using a lot of Run-Pass-Option concepts, allowing Andrew Luck to read the defense and determine whether to hand the ball off to Chubb or keep it and throw it to one of the favorable receiver matchups. Nick Chubb is going to be our feature back and will get most of the touches. We want to constantly keep the defense on their heels and not as aggressive, which will also help slow down the pass rush. We'll utilize some pulling linemen and zone read concepts, which we feel will work better than to just trying to out-muscle their defensive line up front. We will incorporate a couple of sweeps and tosses, with Sherman leading the way, and we'll also utilize a number of jet sweeps, both fakes (to Cooks / Samuel) as well as a couple of actual handoffs, with the players having a full head of steam. We want to make sure we take advantage of the running game, but if the defense isn't giving a favorable look Luck will keep the ball in his hands. We will sprinkle in some draw plays as well.

Passing Game Focus- We want to be aggressive and attack the Cuba secondary. We will have Cooks and Samuel constantly in motion pre-snap, sometimes to be involved in sweep but also to get them free at the line of scrimmage and into the flat for a quick pass. We will use a variety of rub route concepts against man coverage, and we will trust Luck to get the ball in 1 on 1 situations with Alshon Jeffery. With two backs in the backfield, we'll be mixing up having 1 operate as a checkdown / route runner and the other as a blocker, with Sherman normally handling the blocking duties but will get a few passes his way in case the defense is busy looking elsewhere. We'll throw in some screens to both backs, as well as a couple of quick receiver screens, and we will not shy away from taking some deep shots once we have the running game established and perform play action. We really feel that our receivers have an advantage against their corners, and we will continue to feed the ball to them in an effort to limit the amount of bodies are in the box against the run.

X-Factor on Offense: Get the ball to Brandin Cooks - We want to get Cooks involved in a variety of ways, as we feel he's got speed to burn and a big play waiting to happen at any moment. We'll use him in motion, giving him the ball a couple of times on a jet sweep RPO as well as faking it to draw the defense. We'll send him on deep post routes from the slot, and we'll use a number of other routes to try and spring him open. We want to get the ball in his hands and let him beat the defense to the edge with some quick slants and receiver screens. With us moving him all around and in a variety of routes, we hope that draws the defenses attention as well, giving more opportunities for Alshon Jeffery to feast.

Defense
Primary Defensive Formation: 2-4-5 Nickel Defense
- Cuba likes to come out in a 3 wide set, so our primary defense will be a 2-4-5 Nickel, with two down linemen and four stand-up linebackers, including our edge players Khalil Mack and Myles Garrett. We will have at least 4 rushing on every play, predominately our two linemen and edge rushers, but we'll utilize a variety of different looks from the front 6 in an effort to generate immediate pressure on Cousins and force him to throw the ball early or away. On bigger sets we will take Malcolm Butler off the field and add another down lineman (Maurice Hurst) to present a 3-4 front.

Secondary Coverage: Cover-2 Man- We will be using our corners primarily in man coverage, up tight near the line of scrimmage to prevent any quick passes, and when possible jamming up their receivers to give the front 6 time to get to the quarterback. Our safeties will play a modified cover 2 zone over the top, where Devin McCourty will be responsible for 2/3 of the deep zone, and Tony Jefferson playing 1/3 over the top of Julio Jones, effectively providing blanket double coverage on him. Tre'Davious White will be the man who will shadow Julio wherever he goes. Adoree Jackson will get DeSean Jackson, and Malcolm Butler will get the other receiver. We want to provide our players with assistance deep as they will be playing up tight near the line, and we're rolling our coverage towards Julio. At times we'll have our corners jam at the line, other times they'll just turn and run in tight coverage.

Defensive Box- We want our front 6 to be an attacking unit, focusing primarily on 1 gap responsibilities and disrupting plays up front as much as possible, whether the run or the pass. With our 4 stand-up linebackers, we will alternate which 2 will be sent (most often Mack and Garrett, though we'll want to trick Cousins at times as well), and usually we'll send an additional linebacker as well, to get home if the tight end or running back stays to block. Wesley Woodyard will get primary duties of handling the running back, and Jerome Baker will take the tight end.

X-Factor on Defense: Doubling Julio Jones- With Tre'Davious White shadowing Julio Jones, we want to ensure that Julio has to work for every single catch opportunity. With our safeties rolling coverage onto his size, we want to ensure Julio gets blanketed on most plays, and between our edge rushers and the rest of the secondary, we feel confident that Cousins will have limited time to throw the football and force it into coverage.

Summary:
Offensively, we spread the field with 3 receiver sets, allowing Andrew Luck to operate an RPO offense while maintaining balance between running the ball and passing the ball, and making an effort to feature Brandin Cooks, which should open things up for the other receivers like Alshon, and also take some focus away from the running game behind Nick Chubb.

Defensively, we come out in a 2-4-5 nickel to prepare for Cuba's 3 receiver sets, utilizing 2 down linemen and 4 standing linebackers to provide a variety of pressures and looks. We will have cover 2 with the safeties rolling the coverage over to Julio's side, and our cornerbacks will be playing tight man coverage. Tre'Davious White will be shadowing Julio Jones all over the field, and we'll have our front 6 be aggressive with the gap responsibilities and on occasion send additional blitzers.

Fixed that.

I'd feel comfortable with Luck throwing to either Cooks or Jeffery regardless of which corner you'd have on them, as in all likelihood one or the other will have a window. Samuel and the others would also get chances if they manage to get separation on a play.

I think the 245 nickel is a bit overkill as the base defense but Dalvin Cook thus far hasn't showed he is a threat in the running game.  Personally, I would have started Frank Gore, who has at least been consistent.

Having Cook as the starter makes this team one dimensional, and dependant upon the success of the passing game which IC wins this battle.

I think both defensive lines are going to put some serious heat on each other. To me, it's going to come down to which secondary is going to make a bigger play when the pass rush doesn't happen to get home, and I think that will be IC in this game.
