How All NFL Franchises Fared Over Last 20 Seasons (Best to Worst)

Recommended Posts

Ravens in the top 5 with their best long term QB having been Joe Flacco will never not be amazing to me. They had freaking Kyle Boller, Jeff Blake, Tony Banks, and Trent Dilfer.

Saints and Cowboys being neck-and-neck is amazing considering how people often talk about how unsuccessful and dysfunctional the Cowboys have been over the last 20 years.

Let's remember the Saints were a bottom dweller for pretty much their entire existence before Drew Brees got there.

Jim Haslett and Aaron Brooks ain't winning you games.

The start date is 1999 though. Only that season and 2005 where really terrible with them going 3-13. The rest of the bad seasons they went 7-9.

Amazed the Chargers are above .500 since this includes the 8 years of ineptitude that was Mike McCoy and Norv Turner.

Their win % out of the division is actually surprisingly competent.

To be fair, They did give us our first playoff win in franchise history. People can crap on them but they did have some minor success.

It's worth noting that the AFC North and NFC East are the only divisions with two teams in the top 10 on this chart.

One playoff appearance in 20 years.  You have to try to be that bad.

Looking back over the past 20 seasons (Regular AND Postseason) to see how each NFL franchise fared overall in winning percentage, playoff appearances, division titles, etc. counting down from the best team in the league to the worst.......

I’m a fan of the effort, but not the rankings. No way should the Cowboys be ranked higher than the Giants. The Ravens should be higher than the Eagles, etc. The list should be weighted towards:

a) Super Bowls- because that’s the number one goal of each team. On that front the Patriots, Steelers, Ravens, and Giants are multi-winners. (6 points)

b) Conference Titles- Representing the conference is the second most prestigious award that a team can be given. (5 points)

c) Playoff wins- This is all about team legacy. Where a team is seeded or a divisional title pales to whether they get it done when it matters most. (4 points)

d) Divisional Title- These rivalry bragging rights being fun to the game, it also ensures a playoff appearance. Important, but less than the factors above. (3 points)

e) Playoff Appearances- It May not always be pretty, but making the dance is always the goal. Winning 10 games but not having a shot to do more stings. (2 points)

f) Reg. Season wins- This does show team consistency and the strength of the organization, so it’s very important. But less so than the above factors obviously. (1 point)

So while I like the compilation of data provided, I would however change it slightly. Points would be attributed based off of each occurrence. For instance the Patriots:

f) 263 wins = 263 points

e) 16 playoff apps = 32 points

d) 16 divisional titles = 48 points

c) 30 postseason wins = 120 points

b) 9 Conference Titles = 45 points

a) 6 Super Bowl Wins = 36 points

Total: 544 Points (1st Place)

Then from there the Steelers would remain in second place just off the eyeball test. But the rest of the top 10 would surely be slightly different. It would attempt to weigh what matters most (Super Bowls) the most in the league.
