Of all the people, why someone who is retired? I hear Brett Favre is available too

Will come in and be fine with eventually being 3rd string, that's probably why.

They like Sudfeld a lot, and don't need guys who won't be good with the backup situation.

Bradford and Kaep weren't really options.

he will be the back up for only like 3 weeks. Sudfeld will be above him when he comes back in week 4.

I'll defer to the PHI fans who have the beat reporters on speed dial, but as an outsider,   McCown makes a lot of sense for the following reasons:

1.  Someone literally needs to run the O the next 2 weeks and play the PS games.  With the way the OL is playing, it should be as little of Wentz as possible.  That revamped OL is getting their QB in harm's way a lot right now.

2.  Remember that Lane Johnson is suspended the first 4 games.  So sure, Sudfeld's back soon - but he's going to miss games in September,   The Iggles are way better off getting a vet who can learn the basics of an O pretty quickly, and piecemeal it together if Wentz goes down.     He doesn't have to pull a SB52 Foles to get W's for the PHI team.   The first 4 games are WAS, @ATL, DET and @GB.   You can see how WAS & DET games are ones where they just need a caretaker QB to get the W, he fits that bill way more than Thorson does right now - Thorson has some 2020+ promise as a backup, but he's sushi level raw right now.

3.  Once Sudfield is back, Thorson likely is getting waived and getting the PS treatment, McCown goes as 3rd QB.  And the kicker - he basically becomes an extra coach.   McCown is the one QB recently retired who is being pegged as a future HC.   He's that smart and good on the preparation / teaching end.

Honestly, it's a no-lose prop, and it's definitely needed after the injuries the past 2 weeks.   Happy for him, and PHI fans should be happy too - albeit they'll be happiest if they don't need to use him at all in Sept.

1. Yep, we need a vet who can come in and be ready to go, and will ruffle as little feathers as possible when they get demoted. He was probably the best option of those available and has proven to be a solid spot starter should we need it before October. Certain things like concussions are wildcards that you never know when they might hit. We can't be stuck with no one if the worst happens before Sudfeld comes back.

2. Lane's not suspended this year, they did shut him down until week 1 though...along with a lot of guys. Only question mark is will Brandon Brooks be ready week 1 like he says he will.
His recovery has been remarkable so far. Would be nice to have a guy who can come in at the end of games (you hope), that's best case scenario.

3. I agree that's one of the likely plans, though they might just keep Kessler and drop Thorson to the practice squad at final cuts. To your other point, yeah probably what made him the most appealing. If he did aspire to coach this would be a great place to try that a little bit, Doug is very open to new ideas and input throughout the week and games. A guy like Josh being around so long can only add to things. He'll be 9 years older than his QB coach ha.

Will be nice for our young guys to have a better QB to throw to them in practice too. Need better reps than what Thorson could do, some beat writers have said he's been worse in practice..if thats possible.

To be fair, not a single Starting 2019 OL has played a snap yet. So the 2nd and 3rd string backups are getting QB killed. If Wentz even touches the field in the PS, I guarantee his Top 5 OL will be in front of him.

Eagles needed a Vet with experience. Especially with Sudfeld out the first 4-6 weeks. Kessler, McCown until Sudfeld returns, then Kessker will most likely be cut.

Anything was a better option then Thornson.

He was our best QB last year. Close enough.

the year is 2030,

Gettleman's reign of terror marches on

He has recently traded Kate and Rooney Mara for the fat twin from Suite Life of Zach & Cody,
Extended the deal with Jersey to become the New Jersey Beach Needles,
and Has just cut Red from the color scheme for being too much of a distraction.

and this is still the case
