I don't appreciate being called a liar.  I have spent hundreds of hours studying the subjects I could use to back up what I am saying.  I would be happy to have that discussion with you, but unfortunately, much of it cannot be discussed on this site.

Yikes

You know all the kids who said they'll never use the knowledge learned in Math or Science. Yeah.

I remember when I was designing a HS comp sci curriculum I started with a "Logic and Critical Thinking" course for the intro. I've long felt it should be a standard course (not just for comp sci).

When you have adults who can't even comprehend "studies" they base their entire opinion on, especially when they're the fringiest of fringe opinions, it's an epic failure all around.

It's the biggest motivation to start my kids early on how to think critically.

Here is some interesting information that I'm sure some of the "more educated" among you could explain.  According to the CDC, if you look at the projected number of total deaths in the US in 2020, it looks like we are right about where we would have expected to be if we hadn't been hit with a horrible "pandemic."  The only thing is, shouldn't we have an extra quarter million Covid-19 deaths over and above the expected number for the year?  Hmmm...

This is just a jpeg. Where is this data from?

In other countries, it’s a left and right issue with regards to how to actually stop the virus. In America, it feels like we’re still arguing whether Covid is real or not.

There are very few people who are unwilling to acknowledge the fact that Covid-19 exists.  Where there seems to be a huge difference of opinion is in how many lives it has taken and how dangerous it really is.

Maybe you ought to follow those links tbh. I don't think you meant to post intentionally misleading data, but this is the definition of misinformation.

There is this footnote for example that is rather important: "Data during this period are incomplete because of the lag in time between when the death occurred and when the death certificate is completed, submitted to NCHS and processed for reporting purposes. This delay can range from 1 week to 8 weeks or more, depending on the jurisdiction and cause of death."

So the numbers for the most recent month or two are incomplete at any given time.

But more importantly, you would notice that the table excludes the month of January 2020 completely i.e. they are comparing (understated) projected deaths for February-December 2020 to deaths for the full year of 2019. How many people died in January 2020? 264K. There's your quarter million.

A better way to do this would be to pick a consistent source and compare month over month deaths 2020 vs. 2019. Using the link you provided for 2019, which also has data for 2020 by month through June, this is what we see for the first half of the year:

image.png

So through June there were ~180K extra deaths in the US compared to the prior year.

Again I don't think you are intentionally posting misleading info here Uncle Buck, but you have to be really careful, because there are lot of people posting about this stuff who are stupid and/or have some insane agenda and are purposefully twisting the facts. There is significant excess mortality in the US this year, as is the case in basically every country around the globe, because this is a deadly pandemic.

I will have to stand corrected, then, and apologize to everyone for any misleading information.  I did follow the links, but unfortunately, at the age of 56, my eyesight is not what it used to be, so I didn't read through all of the small print.  I did check the numbers in the footnotes for the first 3 years and then made the mistake of assuming I was ok to go with it.

My apologies, guys.  :(

Happens to the best of us my dude. It's why I was worried about the jpeg, its misinformation 101 on social media. This one was very convincing jpeg though.

Actually, I was the one who converted it to a .jpeg.  I did that so I could enlarge it and see it.  :D

I’ve rarely seen an attractive, fit person whining about wearing a mask and they are the ones who really lose out on showing their face.

It’s always the fat neck beards and middle aged Karen’s. Like seriously... you should’ve been wearing a mask all along buddy.

The next person to explain why it’s such an abomination to wear a mask without using the words socialist/communist will be the first tbhwy.

even by American standards, this is close to a new low. There are plenty of selfish and individual reasons to wear one (e.g to accelerate the timeline to the next MoL summit).

Good of you to admit this, but nothing else matters unless you intend to research literally every fringe opinion you come across now going forward before sharing it/mentally committing to it. Apologies are nice; action to improve the anti-science mindset is what's critical, however.
