Will Ferrell was wasted on comedies for the most part.  He's just fantastic in Everything Must Go.  It's a real downer of a movie, but damn he's good in it.  I haven't seen it in a long time and the wife put it on thinking it was a Will Ferrell comedy, lol.

It is a depressing movie but it was a depressing Ferrell movie that worked (for me) unlike the depressing Stiller movies that were just…depressing

So many comedic actors were arguably even better in dramatic roles too.

Tom Hanks, John Candy, Robin Williams, Ferrell

Samaritan on Amazon Prime was ok.  a 13 year old boy begins to believe that a neighbor of his, played by Sylvester Stallone, is the vigilante superhero known as Samaritan who has retired.  And a group of villains wreck havoc on the city.  This movie is very basic and by the numbers.  You can pretty much predict what's going to happen.  I also didn't like the twist in this.  This is something to watch to pass time.   It's not awful, but it's nothing to go out of your way to see either.  5/10

Promising Young Woman

-don’t know much about this movie but assume it’s a non violent plotting female John Wick story of vigilantism

-Bo Burnham and Carey Mulligan have good chemistry. I don’t watch his standup or anything but when he’s character acting I don’t mind him in things I’ve seen.

-when bo burnham catches her with a guy leaving a restaurant drunk so she sends off the guy and the guy says “you’re ruining this [picking up drunk women] for everyone” and ran away while crying like a poorly programmed npc in a video game lol

-Alfred Molina’s scene of the apologetic lawyer just kinda sucked lol

-Don’t make Bo Burnham’s character be a secret dbag the whole time. His genuine oafish comedic thing is good enough without bogging it down by making him a villain.

-carey mulligan has always been attractive but I’m 30 and i don’t think she passes for 30.

-some of the writing/characters are weak but I still kinda like it anyway.

-ope yep they did it to bo burnhams character

-movies focus is on the mirage of good people that are atrocious and bad when they think they are safe. It feels very relevant to this modern time

-overall I didn’t hate it. She essentially decides to go out a martyr for sexual assault justice. I haven’t really seen a movie like this that brings it all to light as much as this. Excusing points of weak writing and parts where you have to suspend belief (the police moving so quickly and competently at the end, for one, the guys thinking burning a body in the open and just leaving it like that would be enough, another)

Hmm…7.7/10

I’ve always thought comedic actors have a higher capacity for drama. In part because being a comedian calls for being more emotionally intelligent and observational, but also, a lot of comedians develop humor as a distraction/aid to deal with trauma. Some of the funniest actors have the worst demons

I haven't seen it yet, but was Nope really that bad?

I enjoyed it. It wasn’t the horror movie that was expected, but way more Spielberg-y summer blockbuster. There was still horror touches but not throughout the same way as his others.

Particularly it meshed a lot with one Spielberg film. Which I’ll hide if you do want to see it.

Spoiler

Jaws

Like with Us, it wasn’t perfect but was different. This worked way more I thought.

Started American Beauty

What was the consensus view of this movie when it was released? Spacey’s character is a pedophile fascinated with the underaged/young girl. It’s filmed in such a way that makes it seem like you’re supposed to find the girl attractive and appealing, was that how it was received? Or was Spacey’s character understood as a creep and the sexual display of her character unsettling?

I always found it unsettling and for that to be the whole point.

It was universally praised upon release, but it started getting backlash very soon after.

I kinda figured for younger guys back then you took what you could get as far as perversions (and lack of accessible porn) went. But yeah every scene of this movie has been totally unsavory lol
