I wonder what convinced Alex Smith to throw down the field this year?

I don't know...but he's not that bad at it. Maybe the parade of OCs and Head Coaches he had before should have made him throw down field more and had more faith in him to do it. He's had some insanely conservative HCs and OCs throughout his career if you think about it. Or given him better weapons. Really the best weapons he's had before this year have been tight ends and running backs, so his history does make a little bit of sense (Crabtree for SF isn't the same Crabs for the Raiders - we used him differently)

Smith had as bad of luck as a QB could have in terms of rotating OCs and HCs in SF.  Very, very few QBs would succeed in that situation.  I think he had to learn 3 different systems in his first 3 years or something crazy like that.

He has stability and weapons now.

I just figured he got eye surgery this off-season. Maybe he was nearsighted?
