It’s not uncommon for a team with a lot of holes to trade a player at a position they consider overcompensated in order to fill more holes in the future when the team is rebuilding. It'd be hard to pay a guy $20M+ APY when he doesn't fit your scheme and you didn't draft him after he just had the worst year of his career. The Jets were shopping Quinnnen Williams at the deadline too.

So Douglas had to decide, do we pay him and pray he somehow fits the scheme and improves, or do we move on? And they decided to move on. The reason his trade value was low was because he was due for an extension and wanted a huge contract. Which is why the Giants weren't able to resign him last offseason so they tagged him and are reportedly tagging him again today. They also traded away Jamal Adams and cut Le'Veon Bell midseason despite the massive dead cap hit. Then they fired their entire coaching staff and are now shopping Sam Darnold. Joe Douglas wants nothing to do with the previous regime's guys. Hell even Quinten Williams was/is reportedly available in trade discussions. As a Raiders fan I think you'd understand seeing as to how we just traded away two studs in Mack/Cooper and really got nothing in return. And how hard Gruden has worked to purge the roster of any players from the McKenzie era so that he can build his own team. Adams was traded for 2 1st and a 3rd. That is a heck of a haul for a safety, I would have done the same thing. Bell is a washed up bum so who cares. Giving Williams away for a 3rd and 5th and eating his salary is not in the same universe as getting 2 1sts and a 3rd for Adams. Calling Cooper a stud is a joke and what has Mack done for the Bears? Mack is 31 and declining and they have never sniffed a SB since they traded for him. We won that trade it's just a shame those picks were misses. The Jets traded Adams because they didn't want to pay him either. Williams clearly didn't really fit into their scheme as evident by the 0.5 sacks he had in 2019. The Giants had to take a leap of faith, tag him, and pay him $16.1M in 2020. It worked out well for them because they put him in a scheme that fit his strengths. As I said before no team was going to give up significant draft capital for Williams when he was going to be a free agent after the season and wanted a huge extension after having lackluster production in 2019. Even the Giants didn't believe in him enough to give him an extension, they tagged him. And even after his dominant 2020 season they weren't able to agree to an extension and just tagged him again for 1 yr/$19.3M. Cooper has had 1,000+ yards in both of his seasons in Dallas despite playing with Andy Dalton almost all of 2020. He's definitely a way better receiver than anyone we currently have on the roster. Mack has 30 sacks in his 3 seasons in Chicago and the Bears have had one of the best defenses in the league and have made the playoffs in 2/3 years despite horrible QB play. How can you say we won the trade if we missed on the picks? We traded Cooper for Abram and Mack for Jacobs, Arnette, and Edwards. ETA: Mack just turned 30 and has made the Pro Bowl all 3 years in Chicago. Edited March 9, 2021 by NYRaider

Mack is a stud but has done nothing in terms of pushing that team over the edge in terms of winning a SB. We absolutely won those trades and if I was the GM I would make them again. It's a shame those picks were misses but theoretically you make those deals all day long. Neither Mack nor Cooper would have made us to SB contenders and their salaries would have hurt us. Cooper at 20 per season is a flat out joke. Our front office is clearly inept but you make those trades from a franchise perspective all day long considering the surrounding talent we had and how far away from contention we were and are. If they cant make a significant push this year one of them needs to go and I hope it's Gruden. Mayock will be his scapegoat after they miss the playoffs this season if Gruden stays on. When they miss the playoffs this season, I'd put it at 50/50 Gruden retires back to the booth.
agarcia34
Well some how that Mack traded has managed to look worse. Hopefully Gruden and Mayock have learned from their 2019 mistakes. Got some nice money to play around with couple other moves can move that money to around 50 million and I would expect a couple contracts to be restructed.
Jeremy408
One move that might be interesting is resigning Tak McKinley. If we get him for cheap I think he would definitely bolster the pass rush

The Bears defense has made them competitive despite lack luster QB play. Reportedly they're in the mix for Wilson and if they acquire him they're right there in the Super Bowl mix. They also spent a third round pick on David Montgomery the same year we took Jacobs #24 and his production has been almost identical to Jacobs. ETA: You say that we couldn't keep Amari and Mack because we couldn't afford to pay them. Cooper's cap hit in 2020 was $12M, we paid Tyrell Williams $11M to not play. Mack's cap hit in 2020 was $26M, we paid Trent Brown and Marcus Mariota $28M to not play. Edited March 9, 2021 by NYRaider

Nice to see These are those rose colored glasses I posted about earlier. 1. There are no game changing talents in FA the Raiders need on every level of their defense. 2. They 'loaded up' last year and how'd that work out? 3. 'Winning' FA rarely results in a winning program 4. Team that load up in FA are usually awful (see Jaguars/Raiders) and remain awful (see Jaguars/Raiders) There is no plan. It's playoffs or bust. When teams act in desperation it usually end poorly Gruden and Mayock are rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic at this point.

He's worth a look, but hardly think he can be counted on for much of anything.
