a jump of 8 spots based on two games? that can't be right. that's 1.5% of the dataset.

you're reading it wrong.  From now SINCE those times, these are the overall PA rankings.  So 22nd goes to 14 when the only available data is 2017.  The 2016 number shows 2016 and 2017 data.  The 2015 number shows 2015, 2016, and 2017 data, and so on.

By Points Per Drive

2016 - 2.29 (28)

2015 - 1.67 (10)

2014 - 1.89 (17)

2013 - 2.24 (26)

2012 - 1.79 (15)

2011 - 1.94 (23)

2010 - 1.24   (1)

2009 - 1.51   (6)

I like to look at points per drive because some teams have offenses that move the ball consistently and keep their teams D off the field which limits the amount of points they may give up even if they are bad.  I don't know if the fluctuations in effectiveness for our D are normal or anything but it's interesting.  I think GBs defense can be good if everything goes right for them during a season but it seems fragile to me where when something goes wrong it will result in an embarrassing collapse.  It's just not very consistent even with the coaching staff staying consistent.

@Stevein2012, does that take into account average starting field position for opposing teams?

Is there any reason to believe that GB was exceptionally good or bad at this relative to other teams over that long time span?  It's all well and good to try to normalize for things, but 8 years of 16 games is a pretty large sample, so  I wouldn't expect us to be too different than other teams over that long haul.

I wasn't really trying to imply that the Packers were exceptionally good or bad in this area, I was more or less wanting some level of understanding in this area.  You'd imagine that teams who are turnover prone are giving up more points per drive.

Great point to consider.  Expected Points per drive based on starting field position.

And while it's a nice tool to have in place, numbers without context are just numbers.  I'd love to get some more context behind those numbers.  How does Green Bay compare to say Atlanta or Seattle?  Right now, I've got more questions than the stats were supposed to answer.

That is generally the nature of some statistical measure....they lead to more questions than the supposed answer(s) they provide.   The true nature of scientific study/method.
