NFL to have 3 game preseason, 17 game regular season for 2021

It splits up by conference, one year it's the AFC teams getting the extra home game and the next it's NFC.

Except I don't like that arrangement.

I've detailed that the NFL should even things out revenue-wise by moving 16 preseason games (outside of the Hall of Fame Game) and the 17th regular season game for each team to neutral sites:

The expanded International Series would also feature one game at an European city outside London which rotates from year to year, a game at another Latin American stadium which rotates from year-to-year, and a game at a venue in Asia, Africa, or Australia which rotates from year-to-year.

The International Series would have its television rights acquired by ABC for most games, with games in Europe or Africa being scheduled at 9:30 AM ET, and games in Asia or Australia being scheduled Saturday morning US time (but before 8 AM ET); the latter games would re-air Sunday morning at 9:30 AM local time.

Games in Latin America (or even Montreal) would continue to be part of the MNF package on ESPN.

The remaining 4 neutral site games would take place in a non-NFL US city, or occasionally if the Seahawks or Bills are involved, in Vancouver or Toronto, respectively. TV arrangements for these games would vary, though could be most attractive in primetime.

"The additional game won't alter the current scheduling formula, just the 17th game will be a slight tweak. The preseason will be reduced as a result and the expected number is three.  A two-game preseason is also reportedly in play, but that would alter the NFL's 20-game formula of having 10 home and 10 road games per team (regular season and preseason). If the NFL keeps the 20-game formula, 16 teams will have 10 home games (8 regular season and two preseason), while the other 16 will also have 10 -- but in a different format (nine regular season and one preseason). This would rotate each season. "

The better move would be for each team to play a neutral site game in both the preseason and regular season.

All preseason neutral site games would take place in North America (Canada, Mexico, or non-NFL US cities).

The vast majority of neutral site games in the regular season would be incorporated into the NFL International Series, with 8 of these games in London, and one in Mexico CIty guaranteed every year.

Thus, these games can be used to showcase the NFL in international markets, and in select non-NFL cities in the US (though some games in the US would be in not-so-neutral sites to capitalize on the local fanbase, like having a Saints game in Baton Rouge on the LSU campus, or a Browns game in Columbus on the OSU campus).

Expanding the International Series in this manner would be a great way for ABC to resume being a full-fledged TV partner of the NFL just before the new TV deals arrive, as these games would not be simulcast on ESPN. They wouldn't get any extra playoff games until the new contracts begin, at which point ABC would have rights to a wild card game and a divisional game from the AFC in odd-numbered seasons and the NFC in even-numbered seasons (alternating with NBC). They would also have the Super Bowl once every four years, and the Pro Bowl every year. None of these playoff games would be simulcast on ESPN, in order to maximize ratings on ABC.

The revenue from the neutral-site games would be shared across the entire league.

with the games revenue being shared, why the need to move the games to neutral site?

That probably costs more money in infrastructure to have the stadium outfit to the standards of the NFL.   Playing surface, locker rooms, medical equipment on site, medical facility close by, TV and broadcasting capabilities, etc.

the 72 dolphins are not mad at this

Maybe not but as a '72 Dolphins season ticket holder when I was a kid I'm not happy at all. Sixteen games was not only close enough to 14 but it also rightfully meant any team that got to 19-0 would get the nod. There were six preseason games during the 14 game era plus the two teams in the Hall of Fames game would play 7 preseason games...in other words half as many meaningless games as meaningful games.

Sixteen made so much sense. It didn't feel like desperate contortionist NFL greed, while that's exactly what 17 feels like.

This is a pretty myopic outlook. Physical health is not all about immediate injuries. Long term health is more the concern with this move. A player who played every year at 17 games and retires at age 35 has played almost a full season more than someone who did that just this season. It could shorten careers. Hopefully the boon in cheddar will trickle down to the players so I am not too worried about earning potential.

Its myopic to rage about a 1 game increase. These players get paid millions. They can play 10 years instead of 11 with the increased salary pools.

Most NFL players who play into years 8 and beyond are not doing it to feed their families.  They have made the decision to play a contact sport with documented dangers for big money. The NFL and NFLPA have been working for years to make the contact safer and safer but its never going to be risk free.

The boon in cheddar has to trickle down since the players and the league are partners. Now if QBs take most of that its not really the owners fault for that. Its the agents and the QBs.

The NFL owners as evil greedy people who are the only ones that want money is just so unbearably lame.

You must understand that pushing the body to its limits for an extra week takes more of a toll than what you are suggesting. Long term stressors on the body compound without layoffs to fully heal and recover. Its an exponential increase in toll, not a simple +1.

Oof, can't wait for the glorification of when more records are broken without the context of the games played. Like when Moss "broke" Jerry Rice's TD record in a season, but the fact that he had four more games to do it was glossed over.

"MAHOMES JUST BROKE THE SINGLE SEASON PASSING TD RECORD!!!"

"Uh yeah, but he had an extra game to d-"

"MAAHHOOOOOOMMMMEEESSSSSSSSSAHAREKAG'KADNAIFHAKLFDNAKFD111111!!!!1111"

So are you advocating for a 10 game season?
