Could be what "sources" were hearing as the actual cap was just the minimum.  Here's hoping.

I’m hoping.

Hinestly, gutting the cap after a full season was played just doesn’t make sense. There’s no way the NFLPA is going to allow the NFL to trickle the cap back up following this year. The cap in 2022 is going to go back to normal, assuming the season is back to normal. So why destroy rosters for one year?

the conditional 2nd round pick becomes a 1st if he plays 75% of the offensive snaps, or 70% of the snaps and the Colts make the playoffs in the coming season.

so if Wentz isn't playing well halfway through the season, the Colts have incentive to bench him.

Yeah, I hadn't seen the conditions.  That's a little bit better, but tough luck for the Bears, right?

That takes one team out of the FA QB sweepstakes. I'm still hoping the Vikings can land a backup better than Mannion.

At least on the football field, all you have to do is throw a dart at a random board of QBs to find a better one.

Which is all that should matter in a backup QB when you have a veteran like Cousins. Cousins doesn't need the extra set of eyes that Mannion might offer, that is what the QB coach should be for. We need a backup with some upside IMO.

Which, with the move to Andrew Janocko to now being the QB coach should help. He actually played the position in college...something which neither Klint Kubiak nor Stefanski before him had done.   Both of them, somewhat ironically, played defensive back.  Therefore, the need for Mannion should be lessened.

I don’t disagree with your overall point, but there’s so much more a backup QB, in the week to week, does than be an extra set of eyes

Before the 2011 CBA, teams had to jump through all sorts of hoops to carry excess cap space from one year to the next. As of 2011, the process became as easy as flipping a switch. This year, the switch-flip from cap carryover carries more weight than ever before.

The NFL Players Association recently listed the team-by-team amounts of carryover. They are listed below, by most to least.

Browns: $30.4 million.

Jets: $26.7 million.

Cowboys: $25.4 million.

Jaguars: $23.5 million.

Eagles: $22.8 million.

Patriots: $19.6 million.

Broncos: $17.8 million.

Washington: $15.8 million.

Dolphins: $15.2 million.

Lions: $12.8 million.

Bengals: $10.8 million.

Texans: $9.2 million.

Colts: $8.3 million.

Chargers: $8.1 million.

Bears: $7 million.

Rams: $5.7 million.

Cardinals: $5 million.

Chiefs: $5.1 million.

Steelers: $5 million.

Giants: $4.8 million.

Buccaneers: $4.6 million.

Vikings: $4.5 million.

Panthers: $4.3 million.

Saints: $4.1 million.

Bills: $3.8 million.

Packers: $3.7 million.

Raiders: $3.6 million.

Titans: $2.3 million.

49ers: $1.9 million.

Falcons: $1.8 million.

Seahawks: $956,000.

Ravens: $587,000.

These amounts will be added to the baseline salary cap for 2021, whatever it may be.
