GDT Week 1 - @ Atlanta Falcons

I liked what we saw from Gannon's defense. They ran both 3 man and 4 man fronts. We actually saw DBs making plays on the ball. There were PBUs and *gasp* even legitimate chances for interceptions. They played 2 deep safeties and didn't allow any huge plays on double moves that we as fans have been accustomed to seeing. It's so nice to see our DBs make plays rather than constantly be put on islands in man coverage with no safety help.

Hurts was great.  Truly consistent.
He threw the ball away a couple of times, when it was appropriate.
He ran when it was appropriate, too.
Otherwise, his passing was on point.
Great reads.

The play calling and strategy was good and apt.
I remember last year when the Eagles would run two receiver screens with Reagor blocking.
This year Arcega-Whiteside was blocking.
That is the difference between two and 10 yards.
In fact, the downfield blocking was better than I've ever seen.

The offensive line was a mixed bag, but better more often than worse.
The penalties need to stop, but there were very few misses otherwise.

The DL was boss.
The secondary was above average, but didn't capitalize on turnover opportunities.
At the very least, they played like an 8-8 team.
LB's played better after Q1.

The punting was fantastic, ST POW good.
The punt returning was horrible.
It was the worst element of the game.
Fortunately, that can be fixed.
Kicking was solid and kickoffs went into the end zone.

It may only have been the Falcons, but that is what you are supposed to do to the Falcons.
I am looking forward to a better opponent.
In fact, I think the Eagles have a good chance.
SF is mired in controversy and is traveling east.
Take the 4.5.

Penalties were hopefully a by product of limited to no preseason action.
