  1. 1. What should the Packers do about their defensive coordinator?

    • Fire MLF, he hired him
    • Fire Joe Barry immediately and get somebody who will play aggressive defense
    • MLF should lay down the law with Barry to stop playing not to lose, get aggressive
    • Ride it out and see what happens this season then make a decision
    • Joe Barry is great

I feel like his Charger defenses are routinely, uh, poor.  Even though they've drafted defense and traded for defense, the results just aren't there.

Or am I wrong?

Lots of HC's find out when becoming a HC they had no idea the amount of additional time management it adds to their plate and their expertise suffers. Obviously anyone hiring Staley would attribute the Chargers failings to that.

Was he still designing / calling the defenses when HC?

There's been a lot of chatter that Staley is very arrogant and rubbed players, media and ownership the wrong way quite often.  The firing might humble him some, but his personality turned a lot of people off.  He isn't the first coach to be overly arrogant, but it's yet another reason to maybe just stay away.  I've heard that he and LaFleur are good friends, so maybe it's a match made in heaven .. probably not.

There are no guarantees in pro sports.  Sure you want to aspire to those things you mentioned but you have to reconcile with the fact that we're the youngest team in the NFL.  There are going to be growing pains.  We add a good DC and continue to grow on offense, we could be scary good in the next few years.  Gotta have some modicum of patience.

Well, yeah "guarantee" may have been too strong a term.

I was thinking more like this next DC hire has to carry a lot of weight and a solid resume on them.

I'm not going to get too much into names because a lot of people have their own ideas on who out there would make a good DC, and we as fans won't have any say on the hire anyway.  But bottom line we can't be practicing this avg Joe (pun intended) DC hire or nepotism that got Barry here.  Next guy has to make this unit into physically tough outfit that makes yards hard to come by.

Same thing with special teams.  Not just enough to replace Bisaccia, we need the next guy to radically change this unit and make them the best on fundamentals in the league.

You should never abide by the whole "the Devil you know" bull****. If it's bad, get out. Yes, there's risk it's worse but you already know your current situation is bad. You take the chance every time.

Never pass up a chance to get better so you can remain below average..... it could be worse you know

I like Matt but I get the sense that at this moment, he’s out of his depth as HC.  Just my gut and based upon his handling of certain situations.  I can see any number of outcomes for his future.  He could become a great HC and someday have an esteemed coaching tree of his own.  Or, he could flame out as a HC and become a very decent coordinator.  There’s less desirable outcomes for him that I won’t bother discussing, because I actually think his future is quite bright.

How he and his team finish this season, and the subsequent decisions he will make immediately following, will give us more info about his leadership and his future.  Till then, I remain a tad bit concerned.

As this began to unfold I thought we might be seeing the end of Joe Barry. Now I think we might be seeing the end of MLF. It can't be very pleasant in their locker room right now. With enough dissension they could easily lose the next three games, and MLF could lose the locker room. If that happens, Gute will have to clean house.

If Bryce Young has a breakout game against us, the dam will burst.

God I don't want the Staley tree at all... Just please please hire a DC with a modern scheme.... Staleys scheme might as well be called Aaron Donald because that is what makes it work. If we keep going with this rush 4 prevent big plays defense MLF will not be here another 3 years.
