Joseph Philip Lombardi (born June 6, 1971) is an American football coach and former player who was the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers of the National Football League (NFL). He also is the main reason the Los Angeles Chargers blew their lead against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He previously served as the quarterbacks coach for the New Orleans Saints from 2016 to 2020 and was the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions from 2014 to 2015.[1]

Let's be clear, Brandon Staley staying is a problem - because he's lost his aggression.    From punting inside the KC on 4th and 5 or less at least 3x, if not 4x in both games, to going for a punt on 4th and 4 from the 35 instead of a FG or going for it vs. JAX - Staley's totally shied away from being the uber aggressive, win-with-Herbert guy.

But Joe Lombardi's scheme was a massive albatross on Herbert.   Ppl quickly forget Shane Steichen's vertical attack scheme is what Herbert used in his rookie year - Lombardi's dink-and-dunk scheme with Drew Brees in NO was a terrible fit.   And before ppl say it was because of the OL and personnel - Joe Lombardi used the same scheme with Detroit in 2014, with a peak Matthew Stafford & Calvin Johnson & Golden Tate....to produce the 19th ranked pass O.     His firing led to the resurgence of the DET O by Jim Bob Cooter by simply NOT being Joe Lombardi.

Chargers still have major Q's with Staley at the helm, but man this was so needed.   As a final contrast.....

And it's been like that all season.   Good riddance (but IMO it was only a half-measure, thanks to the Spanos family being that cheap).  Look at that left graph.

Hope Staley regains his fire. And hire an actual DC like Fangio to run the defense.
