eaglesfan0075 Posted March 21, 2023 Share Posted March 21, 2023 (edited) Dallas Cowboys Draft Class and Analysis: Round 1 (26th overall pick) - Cam Smith CB South Carolina - There was an immediate need for a starting CB going into the draft, after missing out on Patrick Peterson in free agency to the Browns. This did force my hand as I was approaching the offseason with a win-now approach and a narrow window to compete in the NFC with this core. I ended up approaching the early portion of the draft with a BPA at position of need mindset rather than just BPA. Smith was the BPA at CB on my board and last guy I had a solid 1st round grade on. He needs to work on cutting down his penalties, but otherwise should be able to slide right in at CB2. Round 2 (57th overall pick) - Steve Avila LG TCU - I was able to execute a trade up with the Giants for the 57th overall pick by packaging the 61st overall pick (RB Devon Achane) with two 5th round picks (170th and 176th overall selections which were used on P Adam Korsak and CB Mekhi Blackmon respectively). While AJ Cann is passable as a low end starting guard, I wanted to bolster the IOL early in the draft to solidify the offensive line and better establish the run game. With John Michael Schmitz and Cody Mauch both off the board, Avila was the best IOL on my board by far with the versatility of playing LG, RG, and C and I sensed he would not have lasted to 61 without the aggressive move up. He played LG this past season and slides into the starting LG role on this offense as a rookie. Round 3 (83rd overall pick) - J.L. Skinner S Boise State - The third safety is essentially a starter in Dan Quinn's defense and after Donovan Wilson's departure in free agency, the opportunity is wide open for Skinner to carve out quality playing time as a rookie and fill that role on defense. Considering both Malik Hooker and Jayron Kearse are on expiring deals, Skinner could in theory slide into one of the full time starting slots long-term, in the event one or both incumbent starters could not be brought back. Another aggressive trade, this time from 93rd overall to 83rd overall by packaging the 129th overall pick (WR Rakeem Jarrett) to secure Skinner after Jordan Battle went off the board with the 82nd pick. Round 5 (163rd overall pick) - Eric Gray RB Oklahoma - After a run on RBs was started earlier in the 5th round, the Cowboys were able to still land Gray in the 5th round, who provides upside as both a runner and a receiver out of the backfield, creating a 3 headed monster in the RB rotation with Tony Pollard and Leonard Fournette, who was brought on a 1-year deal in free agency. Round 6 (212th overall pick) - Jaren Hall QB BYU - While not an immediate need, this is perhaps the best value pick for the Cowboys in the draft, after bringing in two veteran QBs in free agency in Andy Dalton and Joe Flacco to back up Dak Prescott. Hall is undersized for a starting QB, but has a solid but not elite arm, decent accuracy, above average athleticism, and intangibles that make him a high-upside developmental QB prospect and should provide him with a high floor as a solid backup QB. Round 7 (246th overall pick) - Jay Ward S LSU - Versatile defensive back who started out as a CB for LSU before being moved to safety his last two seasons. Ward has the build and skillset reminiscent of former LSU 7th round pick Jalen Mills, who carved out a career for himself as a low end starter at both CB and S. He needs to bulk up and work on his tackling to play at safety but as a converted CB is solid in coverage, and could potentially be moved back to CB and be a solid nickel CB.
