Giants Starting Geno Smith

Maybe Eli was benched so that the Giants can put Geno in to assure themselves they won't worsen their draft spot.

Tanking for real?

I'm not sure that's going to save them.  They're going up against a Raiders team that could have Seth Roberts, Johnny Bolton and Isaac Whitney as their starting only wide receivers.

Not the point. People are like “Why would you bench Eli for Geno?” As if they think the Giants believe Geno gives them a better chance to win than Eli. Like they’re not stupid.

No, that is exactly the point. We get it's full on evaluation, nobody is denying that. For all intents and purposes, the Giants are on the clock.

What we're trying to understand is why bother evaluating Geno?

I would assume it is to see if he is worth keeping as a backup quarterback. He's going up against a depleted and struggling Oakland Raiders.  If he throws five interceptions (with the second one being a pick six and fifth one being a game ender) and the Giants lose 14-6, they'll know he isn't.

Doing your due diligence. The fact that Davis Webb hasn’t barely, if at all, practiced with the first team. The fact that Geno at the Jets was amid dysfunction and constant staff turnover. He’s the back up, show me an instance in which the starting QB is out and the team has gone directly to the third string guy as opposed to going to the Second string? There’s no precedent for that

They're not stupid, they're just tanking like hell!

He's played enough in NY for everyone to know he isn't any good though. Why not see what Webb has?

1. Because nothing can kill a young QB's confidence faster than struggling early.

2. Because he's taken very few if any practice reps.

3. Because if the Giants offense completely poops the bed without Eli, at least they did it with Geno at the helm.

4. Because Webb was always a project and it's likely far too early to see what he has even if he had gotten practice reps.

I've seen this a lot.  Why not see what Kizer has, why not see what Mahomes has, why not see what Webb has.  It's possible guys like Geno and Kizer would not have failed as quarterbacks if they had been rushed in before they were ready because teams wanted "to see what they had".  IMO, there is no reason to destroy a high upside potential future QB just so you can "see what he has" on a team with barely any offensive talent.  If you want to draft a QB with a top five pick, having an unknown in Davis Webb shouldn't stop you.

It'll be someone else's problem tomorrow anyway. ?

Some of Geno's comments in the postgame press conference suggest that he may not have his priorities straight. Notably, he took a shot at his former coach Rex Ryan, calling him a "coward" and claiming to have saved his job in 2013. Yikes.

Damn, bench him for that.

seriously who cares. I don’t want him to fake his response. Tell us how you really feel.

So we’re clear - the Giants started 0-5, and were 1-6 at the bye week. They had two weeks to prepare changes heading forward, knowing that they were out of any real chance of playoff contention. Yet coming out of the bye week, they didn’t even bother to begin giving the rookie more reps. Then after bumbling their way to 2-9, they still haven’t given their rookie any first team reps. And we’re supposed to let them off the hook for not giving him more looks, knowing full well that the team was heading down this road? Instead of acknowledging that they completely screwed up not getting Webb prepared, we’re supposed to just shrug and say “Webb wasn’t prepared, you gotta go to Geno”?
