Giants Starting Geno Smith

So we’re clear - the Giants started 0-5, and were 1-6 at the bye week. They had two weeks to prepare changes heading forward, knowing that they were out of any real chance of playoff contention. Yet coming out of the bye week, they didn’t even bother to begin giving the rookie more reps. Then after bumbling their way to 2-9, they still haven’t given their rookie any first team reps. And we’re supposed to let them off the hook for not giving him more looks, knowing full well that the team was heading down this road? Instead of acknowledging that they completely screwed up not getting Webb prepared, we’re supposed to just shrug and say “Webb wasn’t prepared, you gotta go to Geno”?

First off Webb wasn’t supposed to play at all this season. He isn’t ready and it only ends in disaster if he plays. He had all offseason to beat Geno for the back up spot and didn’t. Forcing him to be ready is not the answer

Secondly, this is an organisation who doesn’t want to send the wrong message. Yes playoff chances to us from th outside seem impossible. But within they have a different mindset. They still think there is a chance. The fact that even after they drop Eli they still didn’t give him any reps, says it all. This whole season has blown up in their face to the point they don’t can’t objectively do anything.

This move was about "tanking" long after it became the obvious choice imo.  But even if you're going to say "screw it" to the season and bench your best players, at least start your rookies in their stead.  That at least holds some logic.  Geno Smith is an absolute bust..he is nearing his final season as an NFL QB I think.  Eli, well, he'll retire after this season or be on someone elses roster.  Imo, he should go to the redskins.

So why the move to Geno then?

Giants look like poop here.

Mara says they’re going to wait till the end of the season, but fires both GM and HC (deservedly so). Mara says it’s his fault and he could’ve overridden their call to bench Eli - yet fire them both right after the L. He throws McAdoo under the bus by saying he didn’t communicate it to Eli the way they talked. So the losing wasn’t the issue, the locker room wasn’t the issue, because these things happened prior to Mara’s backing of the staff. The biggest change was the benching and fan reaction, both of which Mara claims he’s responsible for.

They’re apparently testing to see what they have at QB, when the QB position was hardly the biggest problem with this team. Not only that, but they’re dropping a soon-to-be FA QB into an offense devoid of talent, yet somehow expect to get some sort of evaluation from that. They also didn’t even dress the young rookie that we can presume is supposed to take Eli’s job long term, or at least that was the hope.

This isn’t really common within this organization, but what a mess it’s been this year.

Because he’s the back up and they were doing their due diligence. Now I think they should’ve let Eli play for a few reasons. But them going to Geno first makes sense. Once again is there a precedent for a tram going from its starter to its 3rd string QB, without even giving the back up a chance?

There's a reason these two morons were fired. Like others have said, even an armchair GM realizes the best thing to do would have been to let Eli play, see how badly he's performing, and bench him at halftime to see what you have in the other guys. What an epic PR disaster by the Giant's organization.

It proves that Eli was benched for Geno. Full stop, do not pass go, do not pass $200.

Eli was OFFERED the start. If anyone benched Eli, he benched himself. People need to get over this. Eli was going to be the starter. He blindsided everybody because he'd rather sit than accept that the Giants season was over and they were evaluating the rest of their talent. If Eli wanted to start or keep the streak he easily could have.

Symbolic gestures don’t change reality. *Starting* while the backup does all the actual playing is being benched.
