There are QB's now that are/were on big contracts and not worth it.  Dak, Cousins, Ryan

Mahomes has been worth it with his playoff success.

Could add Rodgers to the list of not worth it based on playoff results

I feel like Kirk Cousins is the most underrated player in the league

Jalen Hurts just keep proving how wrong I was about him.  I thought he was going to be mediocre at best.  Last year he blew up and looked like a world beater, and now he signs the biggest contract in history.  Congratulations to him.  He certainly seems like a good guy, and you like to see good people get rewarded.  I hope he can go on and be one of the faces of the league for the next decade.

Little weird that no one has the full structure of this yet, isn't it?

I don't recall any other contracts taking this long to hit Spotrac or Over the Cap. Def something out of the norm. The Jones contract was up the next day

It will be interesting to see how Hirts performs with a weaker roster. Will he elevate a team?

Also will they move on from the power sneaks.

We lost Miles Sanders and Isaac Seumalo, but our O might actually look better (on paper) after the draft compared to last year.

Hell no we ain't moving away from the power sneak. It works 92% of the time.

You do that, you end up with another Dak Prescott -Jerry Jones Fiasco.  You know, We (Cowboys) need you to prove it again for another year only to then have to pay him $40M  annually instead of locking him in at the going rate of $28-30M "pre" Goff/Wentz deals.

Also having seen Carson Wentz first hand, how he interacted with teammates, worked on his craft, leadership, ect.... I'm fairly certain Howie of all people is fully aware of the massive difference in Jalen Hurts the man, QB, leader and Carson Wentz.

You've never been a Hurts fan so I get your criticism of the deal or lack of belief in Hurts, but this was the right move, Before the rest made it 55-60M next year.

What do you mean never been a Hurts fan? I wanted him over Claypool and still rue that decision. I just don't think he's as great as his numbers indicate. If he were in Pittsburgh, I think people are speaking of him closer to a Dak type QB.  That's all.

I'm sure there are dozens of players at this point you would rather of had then Claypool.

I'm just having a hard time remembering you posting anything postive about Jalen Hurts, that's all.

Coaching and supporting cast absolutely matters so what he might of been as a Steeler "Dak type QB" really doesn't apply.

It's like trying to figure out how Great or different would Mahomes look if say he was a Jag the previous 5 years? Allen was a Jet? Herbert a Lion? Burrow a Redskin?

Coaching and cast does matter, for all QB.

I consider myself one of the more knowledgeable people around here about how cap hits and contracts work, but what the hell is this:

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/jalen-hurts-47648/

https://overthecap.com/player/jalen-hurts/8793

https://www.spotrac.com/news/breaking-down-jalen-hurts-255m-extension-1865/

it is a pile of option bonus that when exercised with spread out from that point and forward for a total of 5 years.  somewhat similar to a big roster bonus that Mahomes has.

If you take the fine print below the table....

Quote
  • 2024 Option Bonus: $38.875M
  • 2025 Option Bonus: $40.83M
  • 2026 Option Bonus: $49.785M
  • 2027 90-Man Roster Bonus: $5M
  • 2027 Option Bonus: $44.655M
  • 2028 90-Man Roster Bonus: $10M
  • 2028 Option Bonus: $39.61M

.... and look at the option bonus column.  each respective year is essentially taking that bonus money and spreading it out over the 5 years.  see below

year 24 option bonus 25 option bonus 26 option bonus 27 option bonus 28 option bonus total as prorated
24 $7.775         $7.775
25 $7.775 $8.166       $15.941
26 $7.775 $8.166 $9.957     $25.898
27 $7.775 $8.166 $9.957 $8.931   $34.829
28 $7.775 $8.166 $9.957 $8.931 $7.922 $42.751
    $8.166 $9.957 $8.931 $7.922 34.976
      $9.957 $8.931 $7.922 26.81
        $8.931 $7.922
          $7.922

Still no idea what any of that means? Is it a good contract structure and manipulation of the cap or not?

Look at the cap hits for the next 3 years.  that will be around 5% of the cap.  very good for a team looking to contend.

I think it is a good structure and is built in to manipulate the cap.

Here is the breakdown of the dead money on a regular release:

Year Date Cap Charge Dead money Cap Saved
2024 Pre 2026 Trigger $13,558,800 $104,331,200 ($90,772,400)
2024 Post 2026 Trigger $13,558,800 $102,196,000 ($88,637,200)
2025 Pre 2026 Trigger $21,769,800 $107,272,400 ($85,502,600)
2025 Post 2026 Trigger $21,769,800 $138,076,400 ($116,306,600)
2026 Pre 2027 Trigger $31,771,800 $116,306,600 ($84,534,800)
2026 Post 2027 Trigger $31,771,800 $138,306,600 ($106,534,800)
2027 Pre 2027 Option $41,832,800 $106,534,800 ($64,702,000)
2027 Post 2027 Option $41,832,800 $134,189,800 ($92,357,000)
2028   $47,149,000 $93,702,000 ($46,553,000)
2029 Void $97,553,000 $97,553,000 $0

What you can see with the dead money is that Hurts is incredibly well protected by the structure of the deal. It takes until 2028 for the dead money to drop below $100 million. Hurts has a no trade clause so the Eagles do not have the Carson Wentz emergency red button to push in this case unless things get so bad for Hurts he just wants out. If things really did go that bad this would probably be more of a Jared Goff situation where you are giving a team  a 1st round pick to take the contract and maybe having to give Hurts a few extra dollars to take the trade.

The first real out year for the Eagles I assume would be 2027 at which point he would be a June 1 cut. On a June that year I believe the cap would be $47.9M taken in 2027 and $54 million deferred to 2028. If they pay out the 2027 option the June 1 in 2028 would be $35.8 million and $57.8 million in 2029.  My assumption is the Eagles have a contingency to split the 2029 dead money.

This is by far the best breakdown I have read of this contract. And to be honest I still can't wrap my mind around all the void years, option bonuses, 90 man bonuses. This is the most convoluted and odd contract I have ever seen lol

But in the end it sounds like (as per stated in the article) this is a truly dynamic contract that will constantly be revisited and haggled over through the years but Hurts has all the leverage and protection and the Eagles get their best chance at a trophy over the next 3 seasons.
