Seems we were a better running team the year before Oliver when the offense was slightly different, but we also had Cook. We weren’t able to run the ball effectively with Cousins early on.

I believe this was because KOC used the pass to set up the run last year. Vikings played against lighter boxes because KOC was pass heavy play caller. This year he did the opposite trying to use the run to set up the pass using play action but he's not patient nor is his run scheme creative. Curtis Modkins the run game coordinator along with KOC and Wes Philips need to reevaluate the run design/scheme. Two seasons and the run game has not been good.

I'd like to see what can be done with a new RB coach and perhaps new run game coordinator before we can make any grand conclusions on how KOC's overall approach to the run game is.

Prior to his time here, KOC was the Offensive Coordinator for the Redskins in 2019, where a 34 year Adrian Peterson ran for nearly 900 yards on just over 200 carries (4.3 y/a), and that team was horrendous. In 2020 with the Rams, he still managed to get 1600 yards out of Cam Akers, Darrell Henderson and Malcolm Brown. By 2021, he got 1300 yards from Darrell Henderson and Sony Michel.

His entire time as OC or HC, he's been handling, at the very best, average RBs and still being moderately successful in the run game. This year probably could have been better, but when Cousins went down, so did the entire offense.

I would contend that a 34 year old AD would still be better than 2/3 rds of the rbs that were in the league.  Also, remember that this is the first time O'Connell has been the play caller.  He needs an old school coach to show him the value of the running game.  A master class from Bill Parcells or Mike Shanahan would be good for him coupled with close film study of Kyle Shanahan's and Sean McVays creative calling of the running game for the "modern" game.

That they didn’t have a plan beyond Kirk, if they actually wanted to move off of Kirk at the end of this season, which might have been the case as they didn’t extend him last off season

hmm... so they didn't have a plan to take care of what they didn't do...

got it.

Not calling for a one dimensional offense, would just rather see the team running 3 WRs more often than not, and being able to run out of it. Of course we need a third WR worth playing over Oliver. Seems we were a better running team the year before Oliver when the offense was slightly different, but we also had Cook. We weren’t able to run the ball effectively with Cousins early on.

Seems a lot of the running game ineffectiveness was Mattison.
