Tartt was a guy I had in my mock draft for the 4th round, and hated him in the 2nd. But I've always liked him as a player. Hope that continues.

I know Colbert has been playing FS as of late due to injuries. Do you guys think he can stick there or is he better off as an in the box S?

I actually think that he's a better fit at FS personally. He's got the speed and range to cover the ground, has history as a cover corner so he's not lost if he has to match up on a tight end from time to time. One of his problems coming out was tackling, which is not something I want from my in the box safety.

sounds good. Do you think we move on from ward?

I mention it before in the one of the GDT I think that I don't believe it's a lock that he's here next year. I think he has something like an 8.5 cap hit with no dead money, and quite frankly, he hasn't been worth that.

This is where it gets tricky though - from a money standpoint, there's really not a reason to get rid of him after this year as we aren't going to use all of the money we have this off season, but at the same time, you get the rollover. So we could probably use it the year after. I personally don't think he looked like anything special at safety, but the sample size is small and he was hurt all off season so he didn't get in a lot of work in training camp. He also can't stay healthy, which is another issue.

Personally, what I would do is re-sign Reid to a below market deal (I think his activism is going to impact his market). I like the three safety approach on passing downs with Reid at LB. I'd move Ward back to corner, and I'd start Colbert / Reid / Tartt at safety (alternating as needed).

I feel like every safety we have is better in the box. That is with the exception of Ward, but you'll have to forgive me for forgetting him. He's not often available.

I was going to say, Ward has been injured far too much for me to think that he's part of the long term thought process at safety. I would like Forge mentioned, sign Reid to a reasonable contract and use a 3 safety rotation. I don't think we will cut Ward, but maybe he will be used as trade bait?

I think there's a pretty good chance we cut Ward, honestly. Really depends on how heavy we hit free agency. Garoppolo looks like he's going to get a good chunk of cash from us should he continue to play like he did against the Bears, and we will need to resign Tartt by the end of next season, and Buckner will get a big deal after that. While we have plenty of room, if we pay some big bucks for an Allen Robinson or a player of that sort, we may be more interested in rolling that $8M over into 2019's cap than keeping Ward around as a potential backup. I mean, it's very clear the team has no affinity for Baalke-era players. Aside from Tartt/Buckner, there is no non-specialist on the team brought in by Baalke likely to stick around long-term.

I think we should just put Ward back at Corner, myself. He is much better than Dontae...at least if Ward could stay on the field. :/

Yeah, if he's back in 2018 - it should be at CB. That would be the best way to get him playing time with the emergence of Colbert. In any case, I would hope we intend on replacing Johnson.

I still want Prince. Didn't understand why nobody had interest in him last year. He's a capable, professional corner. He's not going to light the world on fire, but he's been a very solid cornerback for years now. I don't understand why teams really aren't into him.

Better yet, we should put Ward at the nickel corner spot, because Williams has been booty. I know he just got resigned, but having Ward as the 4th backup corner who can play nearly every spot in the secondary, that's worth something. Hell, i'd be ok with him replacing Dontae Johnson, he's booty too.

With Colbert's speed I thought he might fit in at deep S. Wasn't expecting much but that was where I saw him fitting.  TUrns out he's a hellacious hitter and as you said might also be better as a SS. Sure wish we could pick up an Earl Thomas of our own.  Adams and Hooker might have been our best chance.

We could go back to back offensive line picks. Nelson and then Price. Probably while still trading back. Yay or nay?

Would be just fine with me. G, C and WR -  I think we need to draft at least two of those positions high or relatively high and fill the third with a quality FA.

My question is: what will help getting the team back into contention: the best RB ever (not saying Saquon is, this is just for the sake of the argument) or just about any other position of need? Any OL, a #1 WR, an explosive pass rusher or a lockdown corner. All those players are more likely to bring us closer to the playoffs than a great RB, in my opinion. RB is probably the position where it's easiest to get production from later on in the draft. Finding a great pass rusher is comparatively harder. Finding an OL who is plug-and-play is harder. So in my mind, I don't see Barkley being the pick.

I think we need a really good RB, but maybe not more than a couple of really good o-line guys. If Hyde leaves then our need for RB goes up significantly.  Doesn't mean we take Barkley or any RB very high, but without Hyde we'll need to pick one up somehow.

Somebody help me with some facts here ... I'm kind of thinking that even when a RB turns out to be great they often don't turn out to be great for very long. On the other hand look at Joe Thomas, or even our own Joe Staley.  Is it just my impression or do o-line guys who turn out to be great stay solid contributors for longer than RBs do? Getting a perrenial pro bowl o-line guy could help solidy the line for decade to come.

@big9erfan It is easiest for me to not read this. I know what you are trying to say, and what you say remains untrue. Plain and simple.

Not going to try to change your mind.  Do your own usual thorough research.  I think you'll change your own mind.
