Upgrades that do not solve their defensive issues nor fit what they do. it's about getting people who fit your style, otherwise they had way more options than VVD. For instance, Kurt Zouma is good enough defensively to still be at Chelsea but he's not particularly good in possession. Thats why they wanted VVD so badly. If those two are the alternatives then it's understandable that it's VvD or nothing. Still, there are better players than Gibson and Mawson and somewhat similar to VvD. Signing a player doesn't change the flaws the whole team has in certain situations against the ball though. Turning off far too quickly and turning into headless chicken when the game is close and the momentum is with the other team. To start the season with Klavan in a rotation for 2nd CB is criminal, regardless of system. And to be honest Mawson is a talented footballer.
