I have no idea what that actually means.

Every year, teams sign guys to futures contracts.  It's often with guys that are on practice squads at the end of the season.

A futures contract is one that a player signs when they aren’t signed to a team’s active roster when the season is over. It is for the league minimum depending on how many service years the player has.

so they aren't on teh roster, but the Vikings have their rights?

Yeah, since they aren't on the active roster, they are technically free game for anyone to sign, so the Vikings are able to sign them to maintain their rights going into the new League year.

It's likely that Sunday marked the end of Harrison Smith's tenure with the Vikings. Heading into 2024, he is due $14.5 million in base salary and is scheduled to hold a cap hit of over $19 million. Unless Smith agrees to a significant restructuring, it's in the best interest of both parties to part ways. What better way to move on from a Vikings legend than to replace him with another Vikings legend's son and hometown hero, Antoine Winfield, Jr.?

Winfield has the ability to play both safety positions as well as nickel, making him an extremely valuable asset if the Vikings sign him. Money-wise, he's expected to command a salary between $14 to $17 million per season, depending on how the safety market shapes up this offseason.

The Vikings may want to consider adding Kyle Dugger, a do-it-all safety from New England who has experience in the same system as that Brian Flores runs in Minnesota. Dugger can play both safety positions and can line up as a linebacker, making him a versatile addition to the Vikings' defense.

If Harrison Smith were to retire or be released and they were unable to afford Antoine Winfield Jr., Minnesota could consider Dugger as an option and keep Josh Metellus as a Swiss Army knife player who can play all over the field for the defense. Duggar can also rush the passer on the defensive line and cover bigger tight ends in the NFL.

Coverage has been a bit of an issue for Duggar when left one-on-one with opposing receivers. The Vikings may be able to sign Duggar for a reasonable price, between $9 million and $11 million per season, which would help their efforts to rebuild their defense into a contender.

While the Vikings wouldn't save money signing Winfield, Jr as a replacement Harry, but it would be a great pick up, nonetheless.

I hope Smith retires. It would be tough seeing him in another team's colors.

He’s honestly been an after thought the past couple of seasons so not a huge loss at the end of the day. Great career but same deal as Thielen, sometimes you’ve just got to move on to better things. And in the case of Thielen, Addison was the better option going forward. Not sure who immediately replaces Smith. I’m sure they assumed Cine would be in that role by now but that hasn’t worked out. I’d prefer to keep Metellus where he is.

If Smith retires, hopefully, or is released, there’s no need to go spend significant assets to replace him. With Bynum and Mettelus in place as legit, solid starters, an offseason/training camp battle between Cine, Jackson, and Ward will probably yield an acceptable replacement.

i was wondering about that, if we felt we already had enough horses in the stable...

Having Winfield Jr. in purple would be awesome, but it's a poor allocation of resources at the moment. Safety is probably the spot where this team is best prepared to lose a player. If we're talking about allocating $10-11MM somewhere, Safety is probably the last spot I would have picked.

Osborn and Powell are free agents.

Should we try to re-sign one, or both?

I think Powell will be pretty cheap and should be re-signed. He was about as good as you could ask for when he was targeted.

Osborn can test free agency. I'm sure some team will pay him a pretty penny even with the down year.
