Last night my 98 year old father in law.  The last couple of years had been difficult for him, but despite that he lived a long, rich life.  He was born 10/31/1925...and, yes, his nickname was "Spooks."  He was born when Calvin Coolidge was President.  He experienced the Great Depression and he served in World War II.  He had a long, impactful career as a social worker. He, and his late wife, were married for 66 years until she died in 2019.  They raise 3 children (including my dear Admiral Relax!) and were graced with 5 grandchildren (including my son Lt. Commander Relax).

If you are close to someone who is a part of the Greatest Generation, learn their stories. Emulate their values if possible. Honor their experiences. They are called the Greatest Generation for a reason!

My condolences.

My wife's grandmother is still kicking...she turns 97 next month.  Her life, however, is not all that emblematic of those values...that's all I'll say about that.  Her life story is far more emblematic of the modern-day generations.  But, she's managed to still live a vibrant life even now (although it generally involves going to casinos). 🤣

THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE CONTAINS NO SPOILERS. (as if you could spoil a story that's been out there for 60 years anyway...)

i saw Dune Part 2 today and have to say it's pretty much magnificent.

for me at least, i'd say it's 3 or 4 times better than Part 1. it's as if Part 1 was all character intro and world building at the 100 and 200 college level, and Part 2 is the thesis delivery.

it's far more than just a sci fi film, which it definitely delivers on quite well, but is also a cultural statement dealing with the effects of oppression, gender equality, religious fanaticism, power, and that despite another 20,000 years of human development, we're still a barbarous and primitive race that really hasn't changed since the Roman Empire.

Frank Herbert would be not only quite proud to see this film, but perhaps even be envious of how Villenue's adaption improved on his messaging.

I bought the Dune book and still haven't read it yet.

That's what I get for buying all these new Star Wars books and reading those first haha

if you read Dune at some point, you'll see that a great deal of Star Wars concepts and themes come from Dune, which was written in 1965:

  • a desert planet
  • a young man who becomes the Chosen One
  • surprises regarding genealogy
  • an evil Emperor with plans within plans
  • Jedi mind tricks are called The Voice in Dune

Books are (way) better, agreed. But you may want to save some time and just watch the movies 😂

I haven't seen the original version of Dune, why should I see these remakes?

PLEASE watch the Lynch version from 1984. Easily the worst thing I've ever seen.

To be fair, Dune is a tough book to get into. Its wordy, not much happens in the beginning, and you need to pick up on all the terminology without much explanation. It is worth it though, especially for books 2-4.

ouch. that choice of words is almost blasphemous.

These kinds of sci-fi movies are not typically my shtick...I've seen all the Star Wars movies, of course, but I've never really been enthralled by them (although I agree with the fans that the Anakin movies are garbage, especially that first one, I've never hated a kid like that one in the first movie since the kid that played Charlie Bucket in the Gene Wilder Wonka) ...and certainly haven't made a serious effort at seeing the offshoots on Disney Plus...I think I've seen a couple of the episodes of the Mandalorian...haven't watched any of the others that appear on there.
