Alright @rudyZ, I'm sorry but don't think your theory here plays out unless you think all three of them hate any and every opportunity presented to them lol.

Just looks like Shanny isn't letting them go until their contract expires. If you sign a two year deal, then you are staying two years unless you get let go before expiration.

I don't know how I feel about this. Some are getting legitimate upgrades in position that could help them become head coaches in the future. I know other teams implement a similar strategy, but………

I have a hard time believing these assistants are being denied chances to interview without them having a say in it. These are people Kyle has to work with for at least one more year. If you're an assistant and your boss denies you opportunities to advance against your will, would you want to work with that guy?

Ideally, Scangarello, McDaniels and Lafleur just really want to be here. They want to be a part of what we're building. Maybe our hopeful successes are part of their calculations. Now they're proving to be faithful to their employer, and imagine we make the playoffs next year, and they're even hotter names... they might get even better situations than what's on the table right now. More power, more money, a longer termed contract, who knows. They're not exactly at the top of the food chain right now. But a year from now, it might be very different. It might be worse too, but people bet on themselves all the time.

Here is the thing, they are being denied a chance to INTERVIEW not necessarily being hired by that team. If they don't want the job after the job, they can tell that team that. We see it with head coaching vacancies all the time.

If it was one guy we denied, then you can say Shanny did that coach a favor as he really didn't want the job. But to deny ALL three? Sorry, have a hard time believing none of them didn't even want an opportunity to interview for an upgrade position.

Atleast give em the experience of interviewing for jobs.

Shanny/Lynch aren't different from some other teams per se, but others will give their positional coaches an opportunity to interview for coordinator gigs. Technically they have the right to deny permission so it is what it is. Only thing is if the tables turn and we want interview a positional coach for the DC gig? Doubt any team allows that after seeing what Shanny/Lynch did with their coaches this year.

Maiocco did say the coaches have two year deals that get extended upon expiration. So next year they will be free to interview elsewhere as long as they don't extend their contracts. If Jimmy G stays healthy and the offense explodes? Will only increase their stock and put them in demand for possibly HC gigs. I mean look at who the Bengals are going to hire.

I wonder how much the senior bowl plays a factor into the decision to block guys. I mean, most coaching staffs won't have to do any actual coaching until like may, we have to do some in 10 days or whatever. Big difference there

Also, sometimes these interviews are just information gathering by other teams. They ask you questions about the ins and outs of the system you run. Maybe Kyle doesn't want to hand over any info to other teams

I have no issues with it. We have been denied plenty of times in the past to speak to guys. The only thing youd worry about is your ability to hire a staff down the road when guys are looking to move up the ranks, but I think given the way coaches get hired now, working under Kyle has to be one of the more attractive destinations in football

I agree that it makes no sense to short-staff ourselves going into the senior bowl week in less than 10 days. We're already one position coach short, and we might not even get the chance to fill that spot before we go coaching that game. Imagine having to coach without those 3 coaches on offense. So it does make sense to want to keep the staff as intact as possible. And I'm sure these guys understand such a thing.

And it's not like they're held against their will. They aren't shackled. They don't have a ball and chain. They agreed to a two year contract last year. I think staying here for one more year actually looks better on their résumé than taking a chance going elsewhere. What if Matt Lafleur is actually a bad HC, and Mike Lafleur's value go down because of it? He might not get another OC job again. It's actually very safe to stay here. He benefits from the aura of working under an offensive minded coach, and gets none of the blame if our offense regresses. There will be openings next year too. That's pretty much the only certainty about the NFL, it's that coaches will get fired.

I think we talk about it more because it's rare we hear about it. Lots of teams block one assistant to interview every year. We just happened to block three. Maybe all these teams that block one assistant would probably block three if three were coveted, but it doesn't happen. It just happened to us, and Kyle has to be the bad guy who don't let his assistants interview. If it had been just one guy, nobody would talk about it. Kyle's mistake was to assemble a good coaching staff?

Bring back Tomsula!!!!!!

Fairly or not, this probably has a lot to do with the lack of development of Solomon Thomas. Because overall, the DL was actually pretty solid. The lack of edge rushers is what holds it back but nothing Zgonina could do about that.

Don't think he did a bad job overall but if we can improve we should. From what i understand he was more the run game DL Coach after we signed Kiffin as the pass rush specialist.
