Love that Sheppard is picking up second round picks in these deals. I believe they got one in the three-way trade... then two to three (third is the right to swap) in the Sato deal.

Ernie wiped his butt with second round picks.

Yeah screwed us. Not that they usually turn out but he didn’t give the wizards enough of a chance of finding more diamonds in the rough in round 2, like a junior or senior college player who’s just a solid player but maybe not an explosive athlete - like Green/Hart etc - or more chances at Sato types that could stay in Europe and develop a few more years before coming to the NBA.

Wizards owner Ted Leonsis insisted in May that no one would rush Wall back onto the court, whether that would cost him a whole NBA season or not.

That in mind, here's what fans need to know about the DPE and what it means for the Wizards:

What is the Disabled Player Exception?

Larry Coon's NBA Salary Cap FAQ defines the DPE as follows:

This exception allows a team which is over the cap to replace a disabled player who will be out for the remainder of that season (it can also be granted in the event of a player's death). This exception is granted by the league, based on an application from the team and a determination by an NBA-designated physician or Fitness to Play panel (see question number 62) that the player is substantially more likely than not to be unable to play through the following June 15.

A few additional items to note: The DPE grants a team the right to sign a replacement player, not a chunk of money for salary cap relief. Additionally, the disabled player is allowed to return to play if ready earlier than expected, which will not impact the replacement player's status and salary with the team.

1. Bring back Markeiff Morris

2. Marcus Morris - more athletic & a better shooter than his twin brother

3. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (RHJ)

4. Jabari Parker

5. JaMychal Green

While I want the the Wizards to just go young and develop, if they do do this, I’d throw Boogie Cousins and Rodney Hood into this mix too.

Out of this group, if we cant get boogie, I lean towards bringing back Parker or getting Hood or RHJ.

Hood brings consistent scoring and defense.

RHJ is a great defender. So if be like having a young Ariza. Limited offensively but can guard 1-4.

Parker brings scoring, playmaking ability as a point forward type and rebounding.

I'm going to ask a naive question: why would you want a veteran forward a la Jabari Parker?

What the Wizards should be hoping for is that some combination of Troy Brown Jr., Rai Hachimura, Admiral Schofield, Moritz Wagner, Jonathan Simmons, and/or Jermarrio Jones develop into a reasonable rotation across the 3 and 4 spots. Spending a bunch of money on a veteran for a year or two play ahead of those guys is a waste. You want those guys to develop so you either are built for the future or you have trade chips in a year or two.

While it would be a bit dirty, you could rescind the offer you gave to Ishmael Smith and try to sign Quinn Cook now, and then use the exemption you just applied for to find a decent back up at the #2.

A vet on a 1 year expiring deal could be valuable at the trade deadline.  You could flip a vet at like a $15 mil 1-year deal for another team's terrible 3 year contract around that annual price plus get paid draft picks as compensation.
