How to make TNF better?

Drop a preseason game from the teams schedule.

Add a 2nd bye week for each team.

Let each team have a bye before they play on TNF.

Yes, teams lose the gate of a preseason game.  But TV revenue going up by 1/17 more than makes up for it, the networks would happily have an 18-week reg. season that still only 16 games for each team.  The NFLPA wouldn't object, since the players don't add in any extra overall time with 1 less preseason week of meaningless games removed.    And for player safety,  no one will argue that having 2 byes in the season isn't better for teams overall.

Sadly, as it makes sense from all angles...this probably means there is no chance this ever happens.

raiders, giants, bills, 49ers on TNF ALL YEAR BABY. TOILET BOWL EVERY WEEK.

You could just take the worst team every year and have them play all their games on Thursdays. America's team for one year. The ads could be like those long sad ones that air at 3 in the morning asking you donate to feed African children or abused animals rather than the typical hype thing. League could sell it in the name of parity.

Having a bye week before makes the most sense. I also think that teams going to London or Mexico City should have a the week before or after that game. So that would disqualify teams from playing abroad and also having a TNF game. That's mathematically impossible as is so they should only do TNF after week 8 or later. Then base the rest of the schedule around that.

Just for clarity sakes. This chart shows; the number of late games played on each day of the week since the inception of TNF (2006). The 2nd column is the avg point differential and then the med point differential.

Day # of Gs AVG PD MED PD
Fri 1 25 25
Mon 215 12 10
Sat 18 9 8
Sun 207 13 10
Thu 145 13 10
Tue 1 10 10
Wed 1 7 7

As you can see above, SNF and MNF obviously have more games but the average PD in TNF games are just as "bad" as SNF is terms of competitive games, with MNF being superior than both of them.

Just food for thought.

This shows the same as above with more context. Including % of OT games, games decide by 3 points or less, games decided by one score or less(8 points), games decided by 2 scores or less(16 points) and games decided by 3 scores or more (17+ points).

Just need to give the teams a bye before their Thursday night games and perhaps eliminate TNG's on weeks there are no byes (excluding the opener of course).  Might not be possible to schedule that way, but its the only way I can think of to make the games better.

all this proves is that the giants and cowboys are bad.

Make it only divisional games. Teams know each other better and will have an advantage of playing a divisional opponent from a preparation stand point.

This is actually a very good idea.
