I think it's probably safe to say that we didn't pick Lamar thinking he'd be the MVP of the whole damn league by Year 2, because it's simply dangerous to do that level of wishful thinking with any draft prospect. If they did, they wouldn't have left anything even remotely to chance and probably would have traded up to get Lamar even if they were reading the room/his stock the way they were, just to be safe, because you don't leave anything to chance on something like that. From what it sounds like, Lamar was 2nd or 3rd on our QB board, with Baker as our favorite prospect. But they clearly did like and believe in Lamar. And one thing Ozzie has always been super rigid about is not chasing prospects he likes and believing in his own intel/feel for where a player's stock is. The best example of this is probably 2008 where they wanted Flacco - and having decided not to trade up for Matt Ryan, basically KNEW they had to come out of that draft with Flacco - but traded down from 8 to 26 because Ozzie felt strongly that he could still get Joe at the end of the 1st. We were willing to wait in that situation even though we loved Flacco, and were probably gonna wait it all the way out except that Bisciott was losing his mind in the draft room and Ozzie traded up to get their guy basically to kill the suspense.

So I agree that they 'lol they took Hurst first' thing is probably overblown. More than anything else I think it really just says more about how much they were in love with Hurst rather than a rebuke of Lamar. And he's a good player, albeit one who was a little overdrafted, so that footnote is always gonna stick.

In any case, I think the whole Hayden Hurst thing matters a lot less than what we did once Lamar was in the building. Building the team around him was the real and bigger vote of confidence and arguably that means more considering it wasn't all conjecture at that point, we actually got to know Lamar for ourselves and decided to go all in.

People also seem to be forgetting that the team didn't feel like it NEEDED a QB at the time. They had Joe and felt like he still had some years of winning football left. They could potentially extend that window by drafting a stud TE. There's no way they could have known they would get Andrews in the 3rd AND that he'd be this good as well (or perhaps they should be lambasted for waiting until the third to select Andrews? Just following the logic from that tweet...).

Yea it has nothing to with Lamar. Clearly he wasn't a prospect that was going to come into play for them until Late 1st or 2nd Round Territory. And not because of his skill set/potential, but because they knew they could secure him later(As it is with 99% of players). The Ravens have always worked the draft by selecting from a certain group of players within a certain window. Our first window up had Calvin Ridley and Hayden Hurst as the top rated prospects(Frank Ragnow and DJ Moore were bigger targets for us that had just been selected) and in EDC's own words we went with Hayden because Tight Ends have a lower bust rate than WRs. From there it was a discussion at to whether or not we needed to trade back up to land Lamar. According to Ozzie himself, DeCosta pushed the trade through because he wanted Lamar and the 5th Year option wrapped up. Ozzie likely would've been fine waiting, but Eric is admittedly more aggressive/less patient. A fitting dynamic to signal the coming guard change at the GM position.

Fair to say his stock was actually lower than it's Pre Draft position in some of these people's minds after the Playoff game against the Chargers too. Yet we still went all in.

Absolutely non-issue to me. Just look at Brady, Wilson, etc

Doesn't matter when or where you pick your QBOTF.

People trying to take away from the Ravens having picked the league MVP with their second choice in the draft can't be taken serious iyam. not worth arguing about.

Does it add anything to the Ravens success this season if LJ would have been their first choice of the draft?

It's nonsensical logic that attempts to discredit FOs for check notes* selecting players who outperform their draft position....................

Yea.., I hope that's a recurring criticism of our drafting for years to come :D.

Honestly. If the worst thing you can say about the Ravens and their dynamic with Lamar is "HEy, theiy stil drafTid HeYdin HUrts aheayd oF HIm". Things are going pretty good for us lol. It definitely was an interesting selection, not because of the Lamar dynamic, but because of guys like Andrews, Goedert, Thomas, and even Hurst himself who were all projected to be around in the 2-3 territory. Really seemed like we could've waited, but in the end we came away with the two top TEs from the class imo.

Hayden is a solid blocker inline, plus blocker in space, has the ability to win all over the field, and just flat out special hands. As Lamar continues to grow as a passer and we move more and more to an open spread passing attack, watch for Hayden & Mark to decimate defenses week in and week out. If there was ever an offense that could produce two 1,000 yards Tight Ends in one season, it will be this one and it will be Hayden and Mark. Who wear #81 and #89 respectively, and both play like the previous owners of those numbers(One of the coolest aspects to this team that flies under the radar).

New England or Pittsburgh is gonna put in a claim just to make sure he doesn't get to us.

Only way I can see it working is if he just flat out tells every other team he's retiring if they pick him up.

If he got claimed by Pittsburgh I think he'd actually injure himself before playing.

Let's say we are somehow miraculously able to bring Suggs back. Does he immediately come in and start opposite of Judon or does he simply get added to the rotation as a pass rush specialist?

I think he would be more valuable helping defend runs on the edge, since that seems to be our biggest weakness.

Well Jaylon Ferguson isn't good and has been thrust into a starting role way beyond his current capabilities. So just on his ability to diagnose plays alone, I think Suggs would get the nod. He knows the defense and is better at every faucet of the position. Still, he would be heavily rotated though.
