AFCE has a higher win % against out of division opponents than half of the other divisions IIRC. The AFCE isn't a world beater division but people really overplay the help the Patriots get from being in it. Their win percentage against the rest of the league is identical to their win % against the AFCE.

That stat really isn't a good indicator. The last 15 years, those three teams all have losing records against over .500 competition. Also, those three teams have combined to produce about 18 different head coaches and over 40 different starting QB's.

People bring up Joe being 4-0 in the big dance but don't mention three straight playoff appearances the 9ers were one-and-done with Joe throwing 0 TDs and 4 INTs in those three games. Brady's never had a slump like that, so that has to be looked at too.

Yeah, but Joe didn't go 10 years without winning a ring like Brady did (and, I don't think that Joe is GOAT, either).

Really, lets stop acting like AFCE outside of Pats have been anything other than garbage.

That's sort of what happens when you get a dominant franchise like the Patriots. The other teams that have to play them twice a year tend to lose more games by default, and when teams/QBs lose games, those teams find new QBs to try and correct the problem. The Rams, Saints, and Falcons all looked relative poor through the 80s and 90s despite some good teams, and their QBs were infrequently at the top of the NFL while the 49ers dominated. The Eagles, Redskins, Cardinals, and Giants all struggled in the 90s because of the Cowboys. During the Packers run. It happens. The Jaguars, Titans, and Texans very rarely gave Peyton any trouble.

The only division I can think of that really had those two successful/competitive teams non-stop is the AFC North with the Ravens/Steelers. Otherwise, there was never really any long-term dominant team with another sustained dominant presence within its own division. A couple years, sure.

Or how about their divisions being garbage being part of the reason for their consistent and prolonged success?

Im not trying to take anything away from the Patriots, but some users here are acting like AFCE is some powerhouse division, when outside the Pats, it's anything but.

The Patriots have been in the AFC Championship game 11 out of the past 16 seasons. What team were you planning to put in their division to stop them from winning it?

I don't know but they haven't had to compete against Baltimore and Pittsburgh the way Baltimore and Pittsburgh have had to compete against each other.  Not to mention Cincinnati somewhat lately.  A five seed instead of a 1 seed can make a difference.

@Jlowe22 - I get that, but New England is 6-1 (.857) against Baltimore in the Tom Brady years and 7-3 (.700) against Pittsburgh (both regular season). How much was that going to affect anything?

The Pats actually have a lower win percentage against the Dolphins at 22-10 (.688) than those other teams. His win percentage against the Jets at 24-8 (.750) is still lower than against the Ravens.

They even went 10-4 (.714) against the Colts as their most common non-divisional opponent, which is still better than the Dolphins.

Or by division:

AFC East - .776
AFC North - .800

Seems like they'd have been better off in the AFC North.

1. Joe Montana

2. Tom Brady

3. Peyton Manning

Montana owns four important advantages over Brady. The numbers are a wash, since Montana was playing in a more difficult era to throw the football. First, Montana walked into a more difficult situation than Brady did. Second, Montana lifted a different team to a conference title game, and the Chiefs haven't returned to that level since. Third, Montana never lost a Super Bowl, and helped Jerry Rice become the best ever WR. Fourth(and most importantly),  Montana never lost the biggest game of his career, and Brady squandered his SB 42 opportunity. The 2007 Patriots blew a chance to be the best team ever.

Brady has the best stats (beyond being close) in two things which I found to be quite impressive. Wins/Rating when defence lets in 20+ points, and Wins/Rating when he throws the ball more than 50 times. The second one he's 18/9 (Brees;4/15, Manning; 4/12). You're just always in with a great chance of winning, with TB12.
