Oklahoma City EF5s

We've hit a rough stretch after our hot start to the season, but we are not discouraged. We look to right the ship this week against an upcoming Camden team.

Offense:

Camden boasts an outstanding defense, but we believe we can have success on offense with a balanced attack that leans towards the run game. We want to look to attack the middle of the field as our primary focus.

We have a pair of excellent running backs and we plan on using them heavily in this game. Camden has a nice linebacker in Darius Leonard, but he's still a rookie and the other spot is a weakness. We believe we can use Melvin Gordon and Joe Mixon as both runners and receivers to find a good matchup against this linebacker group. We will also use Cam Newton as a runner and on RPOs to continue to stretch the responsibilities of their linebackers. Our base 2 TE set will aid up front with our blocking, and we will utilize them both as receivers as we feel they will be underappreciated by the Camden defense.

We will also utilize 3 WR sets to try and take advantage of a liability at slot corner. As usual, we will move them around to match them up against that third corner, but we feel that D.J. Moore can win that matchup if Thielen and Woods get shadowed. When running out of 3 WR sets, we will run a good number of draws as the pass rush will likely be more aggressive. Kenny Stills will also come in for 4 WR sets. Despite a good pair of safeties, we will attempt some deep shots out of play action.

Our primary counter to Camden's pass rush will be a strong running game with draw plays, bootlegs, RPOs, and quick passes. When passing deep, we will keep our running back in as additional protection.

If Gordon is out this week, we will tilt our gameplan towards the pass, utilizing more 3 and 4 WR sets. Mixon will operate as a feature back. We will continue to attack the middle of the field as our primary focus.

Defense:

This week on defense we want to force Lamar Jackson and the Camden WRs to beat us in the passing game.

We don't feel like either outside WR for Camden poses a significant threat. Patrick Peterson and Shaquill Griffin will play sides with Malik Hooker helping Griffin over the top. This is our standard look and we feel it will be very tough for Camden to utilize their outside WRs.

Adrian Amos will cover Evan Engram regardless of where Engram lines up. Darron Lee, Cory Littleton, and Lorenzo Alexander will rotate coverage on Sony Michel, David Njoku, Duke Johnson, and spy on Lamar Jackson depending on who's on the field. A.J. Klein will also be used against 2 RB, 2 TE sets. We want to take the middle of the field away completely. When Camden has 3 WRs on the field not including Engram, we will take Alexander off the field for Bene' Benwikere.

Von Miller will be utilized as a roamer as we have in the past. Neither tackle for Camden can take him one on one, and we will move him around to get the best match. With our other linebackers clogging the middle of the field, Miller will have the green light to be aggressive. We want our 3 down linemen, however, to be more conservative, control the line of scrimmage, and play the run. If a tight end or the running back stay in to help against Miller, we will remain conservative in coverage on the second level. Lamar Jackson is going to have to make several throws into tight coverage to beat us in this game.

Camden Hood Rats

Offense
With the Lamar Jackson era currently upon us, there's no secret what we want to do. We want to utilize Jackson's ability as a duel threat to free up our receiving options, our RB's and punish the defense for being as aggressive as they're going to be in an attempt to confuse and disorient Jackson. We have the luxury of being able to keep it simple for Jackson while still making the defense make tough decisions. Here are some keys for us to achieve that.

Expect a flurry- We expect Whicker trying to keep a resurgent season alive to throw the kitchen sink at Jackson. He can't just sit back and play zone, because that leaves huge gaps for Jackson to take off. So this week we'll install lots of quick routes by Duke Johnson (his role explained later) and Evan Engram for Jackson to get rid of it quickly if the OKC pass rush brings some exotic stuff to get after Jackson. While OKC is going to sell out against the run, we don't plan on Jackson taking it 27 times, but a sell out should open up easy throws.

"Simple" confusion- With having Duke Johnson playing the slot today we can accomplish a couple things. 1- He's a very talented receiver, one of the best pass catchers in the league at the position and more explosive than our other slot options. 2- It opens up a bunch more trickery against that defense by bringing him into the backfield, showing 2 RB sets that allow designed runs to go either way, while opening up a bevy of play action passes. While this can be confusing to the depends, this type of option offense is all too familiar to Jackson so it's easy for him.

Keep Jackson upright- With OKC likely looking to tee off against Jackson, we'll use our TE's and RB's to chip and help Vatai in obvious passing downs. Any extra defenders that OKC sends will surely open up lanes for Jackson to take off.

Defense (4-2-5 big nickel Tampa 2 zone)
This week we get a high powered offense piloted by Cam Newton. We think we have some defensive matchups that we think we can use to force Cam into one of those games where he's chucking the ball into coverage and making mistakes. Here are some pivotal keys for us.

Our interior vs the OKC interior- We think this will be our greatest match up key today. Tomlinson and Schofield are going to have a hard time containing Akiem Hicks and Grady Jarrett. We'll also be rotating in smaller quicker players like Cam Wake and Solomon Thomas on long passing downs. This will force Cam to move his feet, and when he makes mistakes, it's when he doesn't set his feet and gets sloppy with his mechanics. With Melvin Gordon banged up this week, we can rely on our always trusty run D and focus on attacking Cam.

Tampa 2 today- With Darius Leonard establishing himself as a dominant LB this early in his career (7 tackles, sack, INT, FF, FR and a PD last week alone) we're going to give him the Derrick Brooks/Brian Urlacher role. While our two starting safeties (Byard and Adams) will patrol their halves of the field, Leonard will sneak back into a 3rd middle zone on pass plays. Him being in the middle of the field will be critical later on, and we'll get to that. Our CB's will also be playing intermediate zone coverages with help over the top.

Cam spies born out of our coverage scheme- Playing this cover 2 style today, we're going to be using Bradley McDougald as our big nickel player. He'll play a zone like our boundary CB's will, but that area of the field makes him more likely to be covering TE's and RB's and he's a great match up for that. Onto the spy thing, with having Leonard playing a middle zone, and McDougald likely inhabiting the short/intermediate part of the field due to who roams his zone, that gives us two pivotal playmakers in that area of the field should Cam sneak away from our interior rush.

5 hours ago, Whicker said:

Evan Engram inactive for Camden.

Carl Davis inactive for me

Engram wasn't inactive, but he did hurt himself in warmups and was "questionable" to play and he didn't. Semantics. What kinda loser hurts himself in warmups.

I'm a bit surprised, but I like Camden this week.  I don't think the OKC TEs can be enough of a factor in the passing game.  I am assuming Engram is out here, but Njoku is arguably better anyways.  Ward and Bouye are definitely good enough to limit the OKC WRs in the 2 TE set, and I think the zone system Camden set up would be very effective.

Camden has a lot of young players that probably need one more year to really elevate this team, but this week, I think they get it.

Gimme OKC, a banged up Gordon dings them here but Cam is playing well enough to carry this team and Mixon is more than a fine substitute

Plus Camden's o-line is going to get Jackson killed this week, mobile or not Orlando Brown vs. Miller is a mismatch that ruins entire games.
