The problem with using WAR for bench players is that our concept of what 0/replacement level is what they would do in a full season of play as a regular, not a bench player. Someone that would get 1.0 WAR if the were starting is what we call a bench player but if they were coming of the bench they likely would have a season WAR of only around .2.
