Ivory Coast Black Rhinos

Ivory Coast Black Rhinos Gameplan:

Offense
Primary Formation: 3 Wide "11" Personnel
- We'll come out with three wide receivers and try to spread the defense out. We'll primarily operate out of a single back set, with snaps for Ryan split between under center and in shotgun roughly 50-50. Jared Cook will at times be out wide to give the impression of 4 receivers. There will be times when we utilize both tight ends and go with 2 receivers, using both runs and passes out of those formations. We'll bring Alshon into the game off the bench and see if he's able to provide us with some plays as well, but we're not relying on him.

Running Game Focus- With the focus on spreading out the defense, we are going to rely on our running backs to read the zone blocking and make the correct cut before taking the ball upfield. We are going to rely on some counters and draw plays out of shotgun, and our emphasis will be to keep the defense honest. Not looking for a home run, though we'll certainly take it, but we believe we can steadily pick up chunks of yardage with the running game.

Passing Game Focus- We'll be going with 3 receivers primarily, although Jared Cook will also function as a 4th wide out. We'll utilize a bunch of trips formations, to beat press coverage and get a man open against man coverage. Flood routes will be implemented to defeat zones that we may face. We'll continue to take deep shots downfield as well, utilizing one of the players to go deep on most plays to keep the defense honest as well. Curtis Samuel will be in the slot usually, with Terry and Robby on the outside, but we'll frequently motion the receivers to give them a clean release and identify man or zone coverage.

X-Factor on Offense: Jared Cook - Splitting him out wide will depend attention from the defense, and should provide us with some favorable matchups in the passing game. In addition, he will help pull some of the defense out of the box, which will allow Chubb and Ekeler to find running lanes more easily.

Defense
Defensive Formation: 4-3 Defense
- Our base defensive alignment will be the 4-3. Bobby Okereke and Jerome Baker will be the outside linebackers, with Wesley Woodyard manning the middle. If we need to switch to nickel, Woodyard comes out with Malcolm Butler coming in, and Jackson playing the slot. If they throw some 4 receiver looks, Okereke will come out and we'll use Brandon Carr as the 4th cornerback.

Secondary Coverage: Cover-1 Man- The Hippos bring some bigger receivers, but not particularly quick or agile ones. We'll focus on manning up our corners, but we don't have specific assignments that we want to follow. When they do go into a 3 or 4 wide set, Jackson will primarily focus on the slot, with Carr also having the other inside receiver. Earl Thomas and Devin McCourty will alternate being the safety high, with the other player closer to the line of scrimmage to cover Greg Olsen or TJ Hockenson

Defensive Box- With a single high safety, the other will be closer to the box, presenting almost a 4-4 look to eliminate the running game. Whichever safety comes down will alternate with Jerome Baker on the tight ends, and we don't plan to allow their power backs any momentum to build up a head of steam. Our interior defenders will be focused on two gap responsibilities, trusting the edge players Mack and Garrett to provide the necessary pass rush on Goff.

X-Factor on Defense:

Summary:
Offensively, we spread the field out with 3 receivers, going balanced in single back sets splitting time under center and in shotgun. We will try to bring balanced approach to running and passing, and hope to utilize Jared Cook to exploit matchups and opportunities for other players.

Defensively, we present a standard 4-3 defense, ready to adjust to nickel or dime based on Hungary. We'll use a safety high while utilizing man coverage underneath. We will unleash Khalil Mack and Myles Garrett to do their business in meeting up with Goff throughout the game.

Hungary Hippos

Offense:

Ivory Coasts' main weakness right now is it's LB core. Devin White and Jerome Baker have been atrocious in pass defense thus far this season. Woodyard is a situational LBer at this point in his career.

This week to take advantage of that weakness we will be using a balanced pass-run game plan. We will look to tighten the formation to provide outside lanes to Fournette and Mostert so we can get to the second level of the defense. With the additional TEs we should break to the second level fairly often. On passing downs Mostert and Smith will rotate to be the pass receiving back in the offense and use their speed to out run the LBing core's coverage.

In the passing game we look to take advantage of it with our litany of TEs with Olsen, Hockenson and Doyle. We will target the TEs frequently to take advantage of their weak pass coverage in that area. Sporadically, Hockenson will run a seam route up the middle to test their top end speed down the field. As for our receivers, in two TE sets we will look to spread the ball evenly. In three wide sets, Hock will come off and Sanu will come and we will feed him the ball as well. Sporadically we will throw in a four wide look with Taylor Gabriel running a seam route down the field with Metcalf and hitting the single coverage option to see if IC's secondary can contain our two speedsters.

TL;DR: Even pass/run ratio. Get the RBs into the second level with closed offensive set and TE blocking. Take advantage of LBers in passing game due to poor coverage abilities.

Defense: 4-2-5 Press Man

Ivory Coast lost it's two top receiving options in Jeffrey and Jackson last week which thrusts a hoard of average receivers into the lineup from amongst the likes of Adam Humphries, Robby Anderson and Terry McLaurin. This will give Ryan less reliable options in the passing game to get his offense moving.

To take advantage of this, we will be playing Press-Man Coverage this week. We believe stout coverage from Talib, Joseph and Kirkpatrick can win their matchups and limit Ryan's ability to move the ball especially in medium and long situations. Smith is our jack of all trades this week. He will enable us to have a five man blitz. He will be doing situational blitzing to put more heat on Ryan. When the nickel blitzes, he will be taking on slot coverage. When a LB blitzes, he will be taking on TE coverage. He will be moving freely around defense to keep Ryan on his toes throughout the game. Peppers will be playing single high, while Kuechly and McMillan will have Cook and Chubb respectively. With a stout line in the running game especially up the middle with big boys Robinson and Shelton, along with our second tier of Smith, Kuechly and McMillan, we will look to limit Chubb's progress on the ground as well.

On obvious passing downs, Kyzir White will come on for McMillan to help boost the pass coverage. Davison will also come on in obvious passing downs for Shelton to provide and additional pass rushing specialist on the dline. Suggs and Addison will rotate in to keep the pass rush steady throughout the game.

In two TE sets, Kirkpatrick will come off the field for White. In four wide Melvin will come on and five will bring on Apple with Smith single high.

For me, I think both offenses give a certain amount of inconsistencies, I dont need to wait until tomorrows xonclusion to pass judgement on this. I love both defenses and I think both will accomplish the majority of their goals. So it comes down to one major factor, which offense do I trust more? Sorry Matt Ryan but until you put your Falcons in a position of real success, I've gotta side with the proven winner.

In a very low scoring defensive game, I like Hungary here. 13-10

The lack of offensive weapons and linebackers hurts IC here.  While they planned for Hungary pretty well, I don't think they have the guys to accomplish their gameplan.  Hungary limits the IC passing game just enough to get the win.

You must have missed scary Terry shredding the Bears defense with Case "I fudging suck" Keenum last night. Imagine a competent quarterback. That and Curtis Samuel also displayed what he can do without Newton missing by 10 yards.

All good though, much love.

I think IC's idea to go withe cover 1 is a good idea against a run heavy offense. It puts a lot of defenders in the area that Hungary wants to work. Offensively, I don't see them moving the ball enough to make a difference here. I think if Hungary incorporated some more play action in their game plan to attack those LB's reacting to the run the score could be higher.

Hungary 17-7.

I like how there’s no X factor on defense for ICBR haha

I think Ivory Coast has some amount of success on offense here. I like McLaurin a lot and I’m pretty sure he’d produce against Joseph or Kirkpatrick and I think Samuel could get a big play or two against Peppers in single high.

But I do think IC is especially weak at the LB level and they get abused here. Hungary has a good gameplan to attack them and I think they’ll control the clock and the game with sustained drives. They are able to grind out the win at home.

It's happening every year so I shouldn't be surprised, but that Hungary team is growing on me. I really like their balanced approach and even though Fournette isn't good and Goff is having a down year start, I still like what they can do. They have a strength at TE that matches up perfectly against IC weak LB corps, and Mostert as a rotational back helps them on outside runs, despite IC going with 8 men in the box (incl. 2 safeties though)

On the other side, press man coverage is ok, but I don't like Peppers as single high one bit. Not his forte imho and he was much better last year as a box safety for the Brownies. Also, Wake shouldn't start, but should be used as a rotational rusher. Kelly is a weakness that will be used by Hungary strong edge rotation. Does Ryan has the time to beat that press coverage, and can IC weapons get open consistently enough to beat Wichita grinding offense? Don't think so. They will get some big plays for sure, but not enough.

Hungary 27-IC 21
