I'm not overly concerned about the team this year, but they are'nt a super bowl contender, that's for sure. They'll be fine provided they don't get crushed by injuries.  It's the best roster that they have had since the Harbaugh years at least, certainly the best roster since Shanny took over...they juts have to find a way from keeping him from tripping over his own feet. If they can just manage that, they should get a wild card (though I wouldn't expect them to make noise in the playoffs or anything)

To the bolded - In order to win the superbowl you have to make the playoffs. One step at a time obviously. Its bye or bust when you make the playoffs. Now that only the #1 seed gets a bye, 6 out of 7 teams are going to play on Wildcard weekend. So, playing on that weekend does not preclude you from being a superbowl contender, regardless of your path to get there.

The niners are going to run the ball and play good defense. Fast and physical on both sides of the ball. Well coached with advantageous schemes.

This team shows up in the playoffs. Kyle is 4-2 as a HC.

By the time the post season rolls around the niners will be battle tested. The backend of the schdule is brutal with Herbert Mahomes Brady Carr in November and December. Plus NO and MIA who should both be tough teams.

So, by the time the playoffs roll around, if the niners are there, they deserve to be there and are absolutely 110% superbowl contenders

The 49ers were a play away from making their 2nd Super Bowl in 3 seasons last year and in theory Lance should be an upgrade that opens up the offense. FWIW my Super Bowl pick is 49ers/Raiders.

There were 9 minutes left in that game. They may have won that game if tartt picks it off, or it may not have made a difference.

We can throw out a lot of "ifs" when it comes to the season and how we see teams. Evaluations are constantly evolving. So yes, if certain things happen in certain ways they may be considered them super bowl contenders at some point.

Of course, I didn't consider the eagles a super bowl threat when they made the playoffs last year and I don't know of many who bought the Titans as a super bowl contender and they were the one seed.

My expectation right now is that they are good enough for the playoffs, but not a top tier in the league that I would consider a real super bowl threat. In week 8, there will be more data, just as there will be in week 12 and 14

Lance does not have to be an upgrade on air yards per attempt or QB rushing yards per game. He needs to be an upgrade on a 31-14 record and 4 playoff wins. Shanahan did not draft the guy for his fantasy league.

Trey Lance is the single most overrated player in the league right now.

He's really not given that most people who are reasonable have no idea what he is.

Its such a weird situation because its fair in a vacuum to expect him to struggle as he gets experience. He still needs to make plays and win some games but he also in a position where he is replacing a highly effective QB who is under contract and 31 years old.

So you want him to grow and improve but you also want to win playoff games on a team this good. Its a recipe for at least short term disappointment.

Agree with this wholeheartedly.

There's a very real chance that he's not better than Jimmy G out of the chute. Jimmy is good enough that replacing him isn't guaranteed but not good enough that it should stop you from taking your shot. Struggling year one doesn't mean that it was the wrong move or that Trey Lance is a bust. This is a move that could very easily take a few years to come to its final resting place (whether that is good or bad).

It's not like the 49ers haven't been down this road before. They're just hoping Lance can finish what Kaepernick and ironically Garoppolo couldn't.

Like Jimmy, Alex Smith was replaced by the more "athletic", "physically gifted", younger, shinier version at QB.

It's like the Tortoise and the Hare. Most fans are way to impatient for the tortoise and always believe the hare will get the job done and win it all 1st. Problem is most of the hare's (new shiny toys) haven't for the better part of the last two decades.

Outside of Patrick Mahomes
