The two GOATs of hockey. I always get into the conversation that, had Mario had the injury luck that Gretzky did, he'd be right there with 99's ridiculous numbers. Gretzky played in 70+ games in all but 3 of his seasons. Mario played in 70+ games 6 times.

Lemieux - 1.88 PPG (154 pts/82)
Gretzky - 1.92 PPG (158 pts/82)

I'm very much on that as well. I think Mario was at that talent level, no doubt. Some of the stuff he did was crazy.  The dude put up 90+ in 67 games at 37 in an era of .910 save percentages

He came back 3+ years and scored 76 points in 43 games at 35 years of age lol

Mario maintained a 1.35 PPG pace from the age of 35 on, good for a 110 pts/82. Gretzky after age 35 was at a 1.12 pace, good for 92 pts/82. Still impressive obviously but, Christ, is Mario underappreciated compared to Gretzky.

Expand this to age 30 and you get...

Mario - 1.62 PPG (133/82)
Wayne - 1.37 PPG (113/82)

Mario's aged 30 season, he put up 161 points in 70 games. The leading goaltender in SV% was Hasek at .920 and there were 35 goalies with a save % over .900.

Wayne's aged 30 season, he put up 163 points in 78 games. The leading goaltender was Belfour at .910 and there were 5 goalies with a save % over .900.

LOL

It's the goalie and defensive changes that really make you think on Mario

Sorry, I was wrong. I don't think Mario retired because of the cancer. I forgot he was diagnosed in 1993, not 1997. So he scored 160 points in 60 games the year he was diagnosed FFS.

So, he scored 480 points in 228 games from that 92-93 season until he retired. Yes, that's 2.11 PPG (173/82) while battling/recovering from cancer.
