Because US Soccer wants to prove that the MLS is just as good as the rest of the world's leagues and thus coaching there is a great thing. Plus, they kind of hamstrung themselves by hiring Ernie Stewart to be the GM and thus making the job significantly less appealing to international managers. Then they decided Tata Marino wasn't good enough or couldn't coach the USMNT because he spoke Spanish (how he managed to coach Atlanta United? obviously, magic). After that, it was kind of slim pickings.

The USSF is just a good old boy's network and always will be... I mean, the USSF's chief commercial officer is literally Greg Berhalter's brother. Activated10
I think Christian Pulisic is overrated. Good talent but atm I have Jadon Sancho, Vinicius Jr, Reiss Nelson and Leroy Sane ahead in terms of U21 wingers with more potential. I get the reason Chelsea or Liverpool wanting to get him though because America brand is serious
TwoToneBlue
Looks like it’s Berhalter. I think he’s gotten a lot out of mediocre Crew teams.

Heimdallr
The whole process was a sham and the entire Federation should be mocked, but that doesn't change the fact that Berhalter is a good choice. He knows how to get a lot out of a group without tons of talent, and knows the US system.

titansNvolsR#1
Hires like this are the reason every team needs a fanbase capable of a #VolTwitter revolution. Shameful.

I think that Dempsey and Howard would be improvements over Green and Wood, in terms of overall ability as a player. Only one I wouldn't is Donovan. Heimdallr
So good to see Christian Ramirez get his first cap, and of course he scores. That is all he does. Overall I thought it was a very solid showing. It'll be fun to see how things shape up once the top players are in the lineup.

I get that it was an all MLS roster due to it not being an official friendly match week, but why is Michael Bradley still getting substantial minutes for the USMNT? Yes, he's probably still in great shape and still a consummate professional, but there is no chance(*) he is part of the 2022 cycle. If it is going to be a "young, experimental lineup," why not go with Wil Trapp for the start and then maybe give Canouse or Trusty a cap with the late sub when the game was well in hand? (*) Or at least should be no chance. If he is part of the 2022 build up, there's something seriously wrong in US Soccer.

Maybe not into 2022 but definitely for the Gold Cup.
