So is "voidable" years the new thing now and nothing really matters anymore?

Pretty much.

Restructuring to convert base salaries / roster bonuses (which count in present year only) to signing bonuses (that can be spread out over future contract years, up to 4 more Max), has always been allowed.

Voidable years have been allowed - just haven’t been used that much before this offseason.   And usually not taking place for the next offseason.

It’s because so many teams need to get under the new cap quickly, and because the cap will turn rise to a crazy amount next offseason, that this is happening.

Pre-Covid cap numbers:

2020: 198.2M

2021:  210M+

2022:  at least 220M+ (TV deal $$ likely a lot more)

Post-Covid:

2021: 182.2M

2022: still 220M+ if no stadium revenue lost (and likely still this high or more given the new TV money is apparently insane).

The wild Covid cap fluctuation has incentivized this for at least half the league.    The Saints are just making up wild numbers for the voidable years as a troll to the league.

Yeah im not even gonna bother trying to understand the salary cap and it mechanics. Can’t be bothered. Don’t care about football enough to.

It’s pretty much useless to worry about.  All the front office needs is a few guys with computers and a decent algorithm and you make just about anything work if you want it bad enough.

Who are the saints bidding against when they keep singing hill to these contracts. There’s no way any other team gives me anything close to even 10M per.

The 4 years automatically void.   They are non existent except to spread the 9.6M in new bonus money over 5 years in theory - but in practice the 7.7M left after 2021 is due next year.

Either Hill leaves NO next offseason and the Saints have 7.7M dead cap - or that 7.7M in dead cap gets spread over the next real contract.    Just ignore the 4/140M it’s just a giant troll to the league’s cap message.

Yeah I understand voidable years but why even mess around with paying him anything more than like 5 or 6M a year. Even going back to last year when they signed him to that extension. Who are they even bidding against.

It's just NO having some fun with the number.   It could be 5M per, it could be 35M per.    Obviously there's sticker shock, but your reaction is exactly why they're doing it - as a big middle finger to the NFL.    The league's penalized the Saints for rules infractions, and the Saints still believe they got hosed out of the SB because of the league's inaction, so this is a just a way for them to throw a dagger back that's legally allowed.  They basically don't care.

Having said that, I did get a chuckle off this observation...not wrong:

It’s actually really smart from Hill’s camp to do this. Imagine he plays out of his mind, and is a legit starter for the saints (probably not, but stay with me).

do they void next year? If they do, they can’t franchise and he might get a big deal somewhere else. It’s a good “bet on yourself” contract, even though we all know it’s getting voided, cause it might pay off huge for him.

It’s honestly a parody deal.   NO has lost draft picks because of Bountygate, and lost picks again this year for Covid violations.   They have had issues with the referees (no one  forgets that NFCG phantom non call vs. LAR).

Loomis and Payton have no love for the FO.   This is their way of flaunting the latest method to get under the cap that’s allowed.    Like how NE reduced Brady’s base salary to 1M when he got suspended to reduce the lost salary to 250K instead of millions.

Taysom already had a voidable year on his deal, too. They could've restructured him and just pushed it all into next season, the exact same way this new deal works. It would have barely been noteworthy.

The 4-year extension was 100% unnecessary lmao.
