Ben's gonna retire and that $10M cap hit is going to turn into a $3M cap hit. Then next year someone's $8M cap hit will turn into a $2M cap hit...and so on and so forth. If not for the pandemic, I think we would have gotten there with the cap increase coming. I don't think the Steelers will do that unless they think they need to do it. Like @AFF mentioned, it could be used as the mechanism that helps create their in-season cap space....and then if it goes unused and rolls over, it essentially pays for itself. jebrick
Tuitt could retire after 6/1 as well

I’ve never had a fear of dead money. Just I don’t want too much dead money in places it hurts flexibility.

It becomes a lot less of a pressing need in Alualu comes back, though. If a good one falls in our lap we take him(like Cam) but hopefully we won’t reach now.

You are right, but typically youd like to draft a DL this year and let them learn behind Cam and Alualu....but we have so many other glaring needs that it might have to take a backseat until 2023. August4th
this feels like a good yr to trade back in the 1st if a good offer was available. could get extra high pick for this draft or get ammo in 2023 draft in case we need to move up for elite QB prospect

It might honestly depend if Tuitt comes back...you’d be 4 deep with Heyward/Tuitt/Loudermilk/Wormley. Now of Tuitt retires/gets cut...either a FA needs added or a draft pick. Regardless Wormley and Tuitt are FAs at end of 2022 and Heyward is going on 33...almost have to take a wait and see approach.

The way he played, I think you can add Adams into this as well, which would be 5. I would like to see them take a flyer on a Taven Bryan and see if Dunbar could unlock him. The depth we could have would provide the flexibility. But if Tuitt is out, I think they find a more suitable replacement. They did try to get Fletcher Cox….if they know going in they don’t have Tuitt, feels like they will get a decent stopgap.
jebrick
If Alualu comes back and Tuitt retires, it moves DT further down in the draft. Players that fit mold that the Steelers like: Zachary Carter, Florida John Ridgeway Arkansas Cory Durden NC State. LaBryan Ray Bama Others i like but would have to bulk up Cameron Thomas SDSt Tyler Johnson Az St Nick Figueroa USC Of course, they could always draft Travis Jones so they have someone behind Alualu Edited January 19, 2022 by jebrick

Womley is a pass rush specialist. He has nothing to offer in terms of run defense, so he isnt starting material. We need some DL than can clog the middle and open lanes for Devin Bush to make plays....because Devin Bush will never be a guy who will consistently take blockers head on and win...even RBs and TEs. I consider him and Loudermilk kinda like 2 1/2s put together to form a solid 3-4 DE...Loudermilk doesn’t look to have much pass rush ability but showed some flashes against the run....in his 2nd year he should get better. I don’t think they can solve both nose and the future of the DEs in just 1 offseason. FWIW I don’t think Tuitt is coming back. Id try to lock down 1 spot this offseason and add to it more for 2023.
