It’s not 6 years later as a brand new Dolphins employee in the same way the 1 year old going on 2 years Watson story is being treated as new.

Also the child thing where mom and dad won’t rat on each other’s child abuse was not 6 years ago.

Hill has played 6 seasons of NFL football (and college) since the punching incident and 3 seasons since the broken arm incident.

Watson hasn’t played one down of football since the allegations first started to come to light. So yes, it’s fresh in everyone’s mind for a reason.

To get cap relief you minimize salary.  Signing bonus money is paid out evenly over the life of the contract.     Salary counts to present year.   Player gets all that $ up front too.  As opposed to 17 weekly payments for the salary.   Why no player ever refuses that type of deal.   So in extreme cases when teams need every $ that year it happens.

In Watson’s case though it’s also very much to minimize the penalty financially.   NE did the same with TB12 and restructured his salary from 12M+ to 1M the year of Deflategate.   So they let him save millions off that 4-gane suspension by reducing the financial impact to 250k as only salary is affected.   Bonus money isn’t affected by suspension directly.   The NFL allowing that move with NE/TB12 is why it wasn’t even a question with CLE doing it with Watson.

The structure is normal if teams want to save cap space year 1.   But it’s very much a big relief to Watson too both to reduce the financial hit of any suspension and to also get him more $ up front.

Yeah, I’m fine with NFL letting the NE doing do that for Brady. But definitely not for what the Browns are doing for Watson.

You can pay to get custody. Custody and/or divorces are just civil lawsuits. So two people get together and exchange things.

"You give me $10m and you can have the kids" can absolutely happen, as long as CPS isnt involved.

Except they, CPS, were. Not sure why mods allow this derailing in every Tyreek thread.

The league follows rules and there is no run it by a football message board poll on who can sign what type of contract.

Although to be fair, when it comes to deciding penalties, the NFL is more like a Wheel of (Mis)Fortune in its consistency.  But yes, from a precedent/practice perspective, the NFL got itself in this situation by allowing the Pats & Brady circumvent TB12's lost income from that suspension with the restructure.

With collective bargaining and grievance measures in place, there is absolutely zero chance the NFL could block this move, if they allowed NE/TB12 to do it.   How it plays out in the court of public opinion is another matter altogether, but as a layman, that's the clear message I got.

They have even less chance in this case. It’s not a restructure for suspension. It’s a brand new contract with a new team with a very low year 1 salary for cap reasons. No one can prove it’s not for cap reasons. Even if it’s for both cap and suspension reasons you can’t penalize the Browns cap structuring because some people have strong feelings.  Hill himself has a new contract with a low year 1 salary.

it’s also a huge leap to think that forcing 10 million into year 1 leading to 4 million in lost salary would teach a guy a lesson as he collects the other 226 million. It’s a nothing burger (the year 1 contract details)

Absolutely has plausible deniability because of the cap implications.  But let’s also recognize saving the $ for both QB was a clear benefit.   And a way the orgs and players could middle finger the NFL penalty-wise given the league’s capricious approach to setting penalties.

To be clear I have zero sympathy for the league.  Their past practices created this problem.   But doesn’t mean cap is the only reason it’s going down this way either.  It is what it is.

I think Hill has every right to play. You can read details about his investigation that lead to 1 of 3 conclusions. Either he did nothing wrong with his kid or he is hyper aware of the visibility of text messages in the legal system (or both)

We can’t know so he plays

We also can’t know with Watson.

2 different police investigations and grand juries did the same as Child Services did for Hill.

The people who care about the NFL letting guys get away with a slap on the wrist, Hill, AP, Watson, etc.. don't watch football anymore. If it truly matters that much to you, you wouldn't be consuming it.

I know quite a few people who actually did stop watching/cheering for NFL teams after the Kaepernick kneeling controversy.. if you really want to make a stand, find something else to spend your time and money on
