It feels like groundhogs day every offseason when people ask “how will the Saints sign _____ player”. Oddly enough this is probably our best cap situation heading into an offseason the past few years. Last year we had it way worse and still signed some key players. Next year in theory our cap situation should be better as well.

Lol the Saints were prime contenders for  Watson and Wilson last year. We are talking about Derek Carr

I honestly think Dalton might be better than Carr. And if not, the difference between them is negligible. Carr really is good at selling himself.

Peak Dalton? Sure. Present Dalton? I'm not quite as sold. But to take yours a step further... is the difference between what the Saints might give up in cap and assets to get Carr worth the difference than just Dalton? No.

Doesn't Derek Carr not have to "do" anything?

He doesn't but money wise a trade is in his best interest. He's not going to make the same on the open market and his Raiders contract is solid. The smart move is to just find a trade partner and get them and/or the Raiders to split the contract.

The only real reason for him not to seek a trade is if he really wants to stick it to the Raiders. But then he's probably sacrificing one of his last big paychecks.
