Texas (at least after Hicks sold) and San Diego could've coasted on being a "small-market" team until they decided not to be. Minnesota's billionaire owner literally voted to contract his own team and now they're at least middle-of-the-pack since the old man died. Now I certainly agree that the fairest thing from a competitive standpoint is a salary cap, but that would still require Nutting to spend way more than he is currently. His ilk are money guys through and through. If no one will force them to spend more on on payroll, why would they? The competitive spirit? This. And too many fans are ignorant of profit sharing

agarcia34
It’s in the CBA and the amount of money you can defer is limitless.

rob_shadows
Wait so how exactly does that work? Does he get the money but it's just deferred as far as counting towards the payroll or does he literally have to wait until the end of his contract to see the money? Because I can't see why any player would ever agree to the latter
Danger
This whole saga just further shows one of the many reasons professional baseball isn't taken seriously anymore. Good for Ohtani and the Dodgers but this is just ridiculous.

Because I can't see why any player would ever agree to the latter The Dodgers are paying him $2M cash each year for 10 years, then they're paying him $68M/year for the next 10. He doesn't need the cash now because he can use advertising income. Ohtani is doing it because it turns $440MM into $700MM with no risk on his part, and he gets to dodge California state taxes. https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/tax-payments/strategies-for-managing-your-tax-bill-on-deferred-compensation/L83l5ousH Quote • If you take your deferred compensation payments over a period of 10 years or more, those payments will be taxed in the state where you reside, rather than in the state in which you earned the compensation, possibly reducing your state income taxes. He'd probably (almost certainly) would have straight up come out ahead by taking as much now and investing it immediately, but he may also be considering that if he wins a WS his marketing value may go up more, so there's upside in deferrals beyond the $260MM in extra raw cash it got him. bigbadbuff
what happens if God forbid 5 years from now a salary cap gets put in place? The Dodgers in 10 years just screwed?
