Steelers sign QB Russell Wilson

The mental gymnastics some are making trying to suggest this is a bad signing in anyway shape or form given the $1.2M the Steelers are paying is absolutely comical.

Even if Russell Wilson was cut before week 1, this still wouldn't be a bad signing. There is nothing but upside! The Steelers basically saved $6.8M swapping out Wilson for Mitch. Hate all you want.

This statement is what is insane. You're aware that the ONLY QB on the roster was Kenny Pickett? I'm not even as out on Pickett as a lot of Steelers fans, but if you don't think adding Wilson to the QB room upgrades it, then you are absolutely insane.

A) it doesnt

B) This is absolutely not an endorsement of Kenny Pickett

Nobody is making the argument that it’s a bad signing from a financial standpoint.

The argument is whether the Steelers get an upgrade (or enough of) in talent in Wilson or not and whether that’s where Pittsburgh’s plans at QB end for 2024. I’d be interested to know what Broncos fans feel about it as they’ve had to watch this guy play week in and out for the past two years @Broncofan @BroncoSojia

I think Peyton’s offense just wasn’t a fit for Russ TBH (and Gase is well, Gase). It’s a pocket passing quick drop rhythm passing offense. I think too many people went for the “Let Russ cook” combined with “size of Brees” and thought it would work.

Russ is better in a run first offense that takes advantage of his ability to be moved in PA with a big arm for shots downfield. That’s 100% Arthur Smiths offense right there.

Now for the record - I wanted the Fields direction due to the upside of his improvement. There’s a lot of reasons not to like this move. But sometimes player/offense just isn’t a fit.

So the Steelers do not have to pay any of his previous salary on the Broncos?

It is pretty nuts to get a QB like that, who last year threw for over 3000 yards, 66% completion percentage and had 26 TDs.  Pretty sure he is worth more than $1.2 million, was not not that bad last year, Sean Payton just clearly did not like him as a QB for his system but still...

Pittsburgh gets a freaking steal here, what a deal.  Pretty sure the Browns would rather pay Russell Wilson $1.2 mil if they could instead of paying Deshaun Watson $46 million next year and the year after that and the year after that!  When I first saw the tag line I thought it was Zach Wilson the Steelers were bringing in, and getting paid that little for him would make way more sense but to get a guy like Russell Wilson, even if he is a bit of a diva off the field, pretty good deal, great situation for the Steelers.

You're a Browns fan, right? That's the only way this makes sense lol

Sadly lots of fans, and even media, feel this way and think we’re doing him wrong.

People are missing the point. He's not a good deal because he only costs $1.2MM. He only costs $1.2MM because you have to be around him every day.

And the Broncos (stupidly) put in the offset language.

People are constantly "Yah, but" with this. But it's the truth.

You don't get to ignore the fact that two teams burned cap dollars to get rid of him.

He received ZERO guaranteed money in the future. He's toxic, and lucky to have ANY job, that's the deal here.

Not really sure why fans pretend this stuff can be ignored, when the actual teams have made it clear that it is important.

Maybe the Steelers think Russ is the only one who can understand George Pickens.
